Well most streamers are just modern day comedians. Almost every famous streamer is either really great at a game, funny, insightful, or all the above. I can't really give a great example in history because frankly there hasn't been anything like this before.

Hutch turned a lot of people off with his boohoo I am so depressed all of the time shite. He lost a lot of people when he went all emo and left Machinima.

Hutch fricked up going to Machinima in the first place. He cashed in on his YT fame too early. And apparently Machinima was paying those guys (salaried) peanuts.

That was back when he was getting a divorce. The new hutch is fricking hilarious. Not to mention kimdotcom sometimes hops on destiny with him

Most of the twitch guys out themselves as money whores.

then you have a guy like Castro, who is the #1 Fifa streamer, and gives a lot of money back to his community.

And the past 2 years, he's done charity streams.

last year 40K ish raised

this year over 50K. All of it straight to charities, and then he throws a few K himself into the pot.

Those twitch tards(summit, lyrik, etc) would skim the pot, no doubt about it.

Lirik just raised over $42k for Doctors Without Borders in one 24 hour stream. And what the frick does it matter what these people do with their money? What's your charitable donations every year?

Yeah I really don't get why it matters what they do with their money either. If people are willing to pay you to game then more power to you

I can't see the appeal of him. I just watched his videos and I'm not a hater at all. I guess it's because he's a pioneer and already has the following. I don't find him to be talented or all that likable but he did something right.

I just watched 1 minute of a pewdiepie video to see what everyone is talking about, that was all I could take. People actually like him?

He caters to a certain group of people. I don't like the guy but there are other YouTube gamers that I do enjoy. All about personal preference

Same, the only YT gaming stuff I watch is them plus some of Rooster Teeth's stuff. I feel like even the people I like the most are hit or miss in terms of humor within their videos (except for whenever anyone plays Prop Hunt which is pretty much guaranteed to be funny/entertaining).

I have tried to watch Pewdiepie videos and I don't understand his appeal either. I don't get why the chirrens like him either, there's plenty more funnier juvenile humor in the videos of guys like Mr Sark, Nanners, etc.

He can be pretty funny but at times he plays up to his younger audience. I can't blame him though I'd do the same thing for $7 million

Does this guy even have the rights to post videos of the games he plays? It's free advertising so I don't know that the companies would care.

Still a legal sticking point, but the general thought is that doing commentary over video game footage is protected by fair use laws. However, there are times companies claim copyright. Nintendo does just so they can milk money from youtubers. Some just get pissed when their game gets trashed like what happened to Totalbiscuit with that horrific game called Gary's Incident or some such. More times than not, the copyright claims are not correct. Yet, I understand the need to keep people from uploading full music albums or movies. There's a fine line, but not one that's difficult to toe.

Most companies appreciate the streams and youtube attention. Like you said, it's free advertisement. I've purchased several games only after catching a bit on Twitch or YT.

I should add, if someone does a youtube of a game without monetizing it (having ads), they're good to go. The problem is, the person that uploads it doesn't earn a dime. Some still do, but not many.

This so far off from the truth it's laughable. Nintendo is the only company that doesn't allow YouTubers to monetize videos with their content in them.

Curious as to how I'm wrong. If a video isn't monitized, I thought it made 0 regardless of number of views...unless you're talking donations or something separate from YT ads.
