I was talking with someone today and we agreed that this is a somewhat untapped genre. Are there any RPG's (let alone good ones) set during WW2?

Something based in Germany that picks up with the end of WW1 leading into everything that came after through the end of WW2 would be bad arse, IMO.

I know of a ton of shooters with RPG elements, but not a pure RPG.

Valkyria Chronicles is fantastic but it's not really a WWII game. Its story is set in a fictitious country pulled into a war that shares similarities with WWII. However, the story also has some sci-fi / fantasy elements like impossible super weapons and people with special (magical) abilities.

Gameplay-wise, it's really unlike anything I've ever experienced. It's a tactical, turn-based RPG like Fire Emblem but when you move a unit the game temporarily turns real-time and you control that soldier from a 3rd person point of view until they've used up all of their action meter.

Having said that, you mentioned you'd even take a game from Square. This is probably not far off from what a WWII game would look like if they ever developed one. It was made by the same team who made the JRPG "Skies of Arcadia."
