Less focus on story and more focus on gameplay.

I've beaten BattleToads, but I had to use an emulator and it was HARD.

If you got past the 1st surfing level of Battle Toads

The surfing level was easy once you figured out that you could bounce higher by going backwards first.

The first time I went through the rocket car (not rockets, that was another hard one) level and it gives you cues on what to do next, then you reach the area where it just shows "!!!!!" and you have to guess was ridiculous.

The SNAKES on the other hand...and the GYROSCOPE??

Difficulty adds to the replay factor. A lot of games were arcade conversions, which were just designed to take your quarters.

fricking Altered Beast. I have still never gotten past the third dam level.

I tried playing it again a few months ago, still hard as hell.
totally designed to be a quarter eater. Except you can't continue in the console game.

I think how playable characters are easier to control in modern games plays a factor too. You had, at the most, 8 possible directions to move your character and almost no control over any other aspects of their movement. With double-joystick control, it naturally lends itself to more overall control over the character so the limitations of games aren't as restricting, lending to "easier" gameplay.

But the #1 answer is saves. Old games gave you passwords to go back to the start of the level you died on at the very most. Outside of Souls games, dying in general is nowhere near as punishing nowadays. Imagine Skyrim without saves.

The NES version, Ghosts N Goblins, is a million times harder then the SNES version. At least it is to me.

Are any versions of this game "easy"?

I remember the NES one being stupidly hard, never played the SNES versions.

I still don't know the difference between ghouls n ghosts vs ghosts n goblins

There is some truth to this but it wasn't like people were saying back during the Nintendo days "Man, these graphics suck. At least the games are fun."

true.

Lets remember too, playing a "game" is not the same as it was back then.

Back then you were literally just playing a game.

Now, most of the time you are basically playing an interactive novel or movie that you control with a major emphases on narrative. The point of playing is different now than it was then.

Wiiu Mario

Wat. This was one of the easiest platformers I've ever played.

Even the "secret" world after the main game wasn't very challenging.

again, my problem with Mario platforming difficulty is it's rarely a challenge and only if you're a completionist. like one of the gold coins on the ride the transgender dinosaur stages was a challenge to find.

sandbox Mario is where it's at because you add specific challenges and explorations to the platforming mix. the problem there is you don't have to accumulate too many stars to progress. for instance, Mario 64 you can beat with 70 stars...there are 120 total

but still, I played the frick out of Mario 64
