Why can't they just make a good Sonic game?

Just got finished playing Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, and it's really outstanding. The amount of creativity in that game is ridiculous, and despite it being hard as frick and being killed constantly, I never got mad knowing it was just damn fine game design that wanted to challenge me.
With Mario and Donkey Kong getting 2D releases, why won't SEGA just make a 2D Sonic Game again? If they can do anything with even a fraction of the creativity that Donkey Kong Country does, then the game would be spectacular and sell like hot cakes. Why are they just so determined to make shitty game after shitty game. Sorry, but Sonic's speed does not adapt well into 3D environments. Really, nothing has worked since the mid-90s, so just go back to that gameplay and do it again. Stop worrying about a story and just have it to where Robotik is up to no good again and that's really it. Seriously, SEGA is just shooting themselves in the foot by not releasing this.

Sonic Adventure 2 was amazing. I don't know how many hours I spent in the chao gardens raising those cute little bastards but I think it was at least over 100.

Have you played 2011's Sonic Generations? I've thought of picking it up but haven't yet. I've heard it's good.
ETA: I liked the Sonic Adventure games back in the day but if you go back and play them, they don't hold up terribly well compared to modern 3D platformers. My favorite Sonic game has always been Sonic 3 with Sonic & Knuckles attached. It's one massive 2D Sonic adventure with different story lines for Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.

Have to say I enjoyed this one, but that's the last good Sonic game. Really just stick with the working formula and get creative there. Nintendo is smart enough to know that they don't need to reinvent the wheel with each game, they just take the formula as far as it can go and just go nuts with it. Aside from Sonic being fast, there has been no consistency with this franchise as terms of gameplay is concerned.

Sonic Unleashed was pretty good and is probably the closest thing we'll get to an Adventure 3

The first sonic for the dreamcast where you play a bunch of different characters with different storylines was the best
