Why can't Nintendo just make an appropriate amount of consoles at launch?

They had several at different outlets yesterday. Even as late as 6 in the evening.

Friend of mine went to Toys R Us today and they were sitting on 30 units. He didn't end up getting one, but said there wasn't a line or anything.

I don't think units are in some kind of crazy shortage. You could have still purchased some last night and this morning in the BR/NOLA area.

It's how they artificially inflate demand for their subpar products. Always been like that.

I.e.: oh my god their graphics aren't as good. You can punt every system Nintendo has ever made, and it would still be fine. Save for maybe the PS1, can't say the same for Sony and Microsoft.
Plus multiple reviewers have said that Nintendo just created the greatest game of all time, so there's that as well.

No stores in either NYC or Philly had them for sale.... seems nintendo really shorted the launch in bigger cites

I strolled into Target Friday morning at 8 a.m. and bought one with three games right off the shelf. 
Nintendo always short sheets the bed on launch to spike demand and make it seem their stuff is in high demand. Just wait a week or so till the next shipment arrives.
