What caused the massive demographic shift that lead to more girls playing video games now?

Twitch is not indicative of real life. Yeah there are more female gamers now but 90+% of the gamer population is men.

Any stats you see showing that it’s around 50/50 are bullshite because they count mobile games like Candy Crush as “gaming”

Gaming with millennials and Zoomers is far more mainstream than it ever was with X and especially Boomers. Adding to that you have a far more diverse selection of games while also having a far larger impact on popular culture. You also have parents who were gamers growing up passing it down to their sons and daughters.

There are two people I’ll watch play games: James Rolf (AVGN) and VaatiVidya.

I don't even watch Twitch anymore, I just leave various streams on for drops for games I play. Also, I give my Twitch Prime sub to various accounts that give me new Rainbow Six Siege weapon charms in game.

Only within the very broad context of "video games". Candy Crush or Words With Friends are as different from Call of Duty or Madden as Go Fish is from Texas Hold 'Em.

And that's the problem, people (like yourself) will look at that 55/45 stat then try to make the next Halo, GTA, WoW, etc. with that in mind then scratch their heads in confusion when the numbers still come in with males being ~3/4 of their customer base.

It sets up, then promotes, a false belief that there is this massive throng of females just dying to play Fortnite or Resident Evil, if they just put more female-oriented appeal into it, advertise it to females more, etc.

There are probably many reasons, but one thing overlooked is that girls the past 20ish years or so grew up watching (and playing with) their dads play video games.

If you met my now 20 year old daughter, you'd never guess she's played through the Witcher 3 twice and has probably beaten every Mario game to date. She probably never would've gotten into those games if it wasn't for staying up late on weekends playing games with me when she was younger.

not saying that there hasnt been an increase in female gaming population, there has, but dont let the twitch crowd fool you i thinking thats representative.
