That’s great but it kicked my arse and I gave up. It also didn’t help that I spent so much time playing the base game that by the time I started the DLC I was burnt out

I tried playing the DLC for 2 and 3 about a year ago when I played those games for the first (and only) time and gave up on each after about an hour. Nevermind bosses, I couldn’t get through the areas

Want to know what was fun? Fighting all the way through Shulva Sanctum City and the Eternal Sanctum (the maze area with the phantom knights) before realizing that I had forgotten to leave the Company of Champions after farming something or another...

I had read that the DLC areas were insanely difficult, so I just didn't think anything of it at the time

I don't know, Artorias of the Abyss was really, really good...

ETA: I guess I shouldn't argue yet. I'm 2/3 through Painted World and haven't even started Ringed City

Yes, it was fantastic. It stacks up against any single expansion. It's probably unfair to judge it against all the dlc of the other entries.

They gave me the most trouble of the dlc bosses. Especially Friede.

Her invisibility crit mechanic is giving me absolute fits. She doesn't appear to make footprints in the snow like Priscilla does (not that I would ever attack her...), I've stuck her with arrows to try and track her, tried to count from both her breath and her scythe scrape. I'm neither consistently spotting her to break her poise nor able to evade with a blind roll. That's enough DS3 for tonight; time to unwind a bit. Maybe try again tomorrow.

If anyone has tips, by all means

Alright, got a fairly good strat for her invisibility crit:

If you get close enough to her, she'll reappear. So, charging is the name of the game. After she disappears, she either dashes or jumps. While she doesn't make footprints in the snow (fricking lame...), she does disturb dust on the ground. If she jumps, there will be a circular cloud of dust where she was standing. If you see that, stop moving and just listen (wearing headphones highly suggested). You'll hear her land, and if you're quick enough turning around, you can see another cloud of dust where she landed. Charge that spot, get your hits in, move back. If she dashes, there is a cloud of dust in a line. She'll be standing roughly at the end of that line.

I can reasonably consistently (50%+) make it through phase 1 using two or fewer estus. Phase 2 is giving me enough trouble that I'm going to go level up some more. I'm just not dealing damage fast enough to be able to manage both of them at once consistently. I'm sure I could git gud if I put in enough work at it, but that feels like something that will burn me out on the game for no real reason.

On to Irithyll of the Boreal Valley.

I'm aware

But being Phase 3 is essentially Phase 1 on steroids, if I felt more confident in being able to push through Phase 2, I might be willing to git gud. As it currently stands, Phase 1 feels like pure skill while Phase 2 feels like I either play aggressively, but not deal damage fast enough, and die. Or, I play hyper conservatively, and still probably die, but die sometime after getting annoyed by how passively I'm playing. Phase 3 seems like a return back to skill and is less reliant on stats.

At least that's my perception.

Pontiff down. That was a fun one. Felt like the first real boss fight of the base game thus far. Actually switched from my claymore to the sellsword twinblades so I could get in a quick L1 (I think? Weak left hand. It’s right click for me. It’s the simultaneous double slash), or sometimes two, while still recovering quickly enough to dodge if needed. Also melted his phantom. Still took me a solid dozen+ tries before I worked through his moveset.

Sounds dreadful for a gaming experience. I'll be Spidermanning 2 on eazy mode.

The Haligtree and the Brace of the Haligtree are my favorite areas to grind souls in Elden Ring. Figured it out when I got my shite pushed in by Malenia for 5 days during my first ever playthrough.

I'm aware of that one, but no. Actually haven't quite made it to Lothric yet. Have a quick, roughly 45 second loop to kill both of the silver knights at the Anor Londo bonfire staircase. With CSS ring, Shield of Want, and SoA (god I hate that thing...), it's just under 10k souls per cycle.

Souls-likes aren't my standard cup of tea, but I decided a while back that I wanted to add them to my gaming lived experience. And I have to say, I've enjoyed the Dark Souls games vastly more than I thought I would. They certainly have flaws, but they scratch a staggeringly specific itch that's hard to find elsewhere.

I downloaded Dark Souls (I think) on PS5 with PS+ sub and I lasted about 10 minutes in before I didn't want to keep going. I just don't think those type games are my thing but, honestly, I didn't play all that much.

I honestly didn't like it at first, at all. But, I went in assuming I wasn't going to like it, so that didn't surprise me. I was used to starting games weak (big, sexy single player RPGs are my jam), but I wasn't used to starting out surrounded by "basic" enemies that could absolutely fricking wreck me. I've honestly never been so stressed out playing a game in my life. But it fits, because you're a weak assed undead in a world trying to kill you. You should be fricking terrified.

But as you go on, you realize that the stress and fear are only in your head. So what if you die? You'll just spawn again. So what if you die again before recovering your souls? It doesn't matter. Hell, it will probably be a bit cathartic and you can get back to playing well instead of doing dumb shite trying to force it. The world is wonderfully interconnected. The lore is about as transparent as charcoal, but it's deep and interesting. I actually have a DS1 deep dive video paused next to this window as a type.

Again, are they perfect? God no. But they're really, really good, and I've never had a gaming experience like playing them.

Now, with all of that said, I'll note one caveat: practically every Dark Souls vet will tell you to do your first playthrough completely blind, figure it out as you go along. And that's great advice... for someone a hell of a lot younger than I am. I neither have the time nor the patience to run around confused as to where I'm supposed to be going or what the frick I'm supposed to do when I get there. I heavily review area guides to make sure I don't get lose, miss items, etc. But, I don't do a thorough review of a boss' mechanics until after I've tried it blind a few times, and even then, I won't unless/until I stop making progress. And even then, I don't engage in available cheese. As an example, when I was struggling with Sir Vilhelm recently, 95% of the tips I saw were ways to cheese him by aggro'ing him out of his building to a cliffside to getting him to knock himself off. To me, that just defies the point of playing the game. Now, on subsequent playthroughs if you just hate a boss? Sure, it's a game, play it like you want. But so much of playing these games is overcoming challenges, so I don't cheat myself out of those hard fought wins.
