The core formula is the same, but the second game tweaks that formula so that it doesn't feel like as much of a slog. I'd give the second a shot before writing off the series as a whole.

So the game has evolved a bit from its norm of killing the same ole to now killing these human hybrids of some kind so it's gotten better thank god

every game except 4 follows that formula.
