Anyone else eagerly awaiting this one?

The new races are all looking good - distinct units and playstyles, awesome looking models, the new maps (verticality and multiple attack paths and defensive structures) look great etc etc.

I have never played the series but it looks like a blast. I hope I don’t get overwhelmed and frustrated. I really want to like this game.

Never played a total war game. Been looking into one recently but didn’t know where to start. Any suggestions?

It is worth the effort to get into. There is definitely a learning curve to get into it, but its well worth the time. There isn't really anything else out there exactly like it. Plenty of RTS games, plenty of strategy games, but none of them tie both sides together so well and the battles are just spectacular.

There are a lot of resources out there to learn the game, some of the better youtubers that explain the mechanics very well are:

Zerkovich (gets into various mechanics, also does campaigns) - https://www.youtube.com/c/ZerkovichGames/videos

Turin (primarily multiplayer, but also a lot of single player streams) - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNDJiDFJWaiKktyUBmVzGYA/videos

milkandcookiesTW (good all around total war videos) - https://www.youtube.com/c/milkandcookiesTW/videos

LegendofTotalWar (the king of cheese, exploits, AI breaking and just generally most efficient single player tactics) - https://www.youtube.com/c/LegendofTotalWar

lionheartx10 - does some good campaigns, more geared towards new players - https://www.youtube.com/c/lionheartx10/videos

They have a large number of historical titles going back 20+ years, obviously the oldest ones are dated now but anything since Total War: Rome 2 will look and play very nicely on any modern pc.

As far as where to start, it really depends on which era you are most interested in. I personally think the warhammer ones have been the best purely due to the sheer variety of races, units, magical powers and items etc that just set it apart from the historical titles. Also, buying either warhammer 1 or 2(and their various dlcs) will grant you access to those races / factions in warhammer 3 whenever the "Mortal Empires" super campaign mode comes out in a month or 3.

That being said, the historical based ones are great too.

Rome 2, Three Kingdoms (China), and Troy would be the most recent historical ones - all of which have been very positively reviewed.

Very excited. Probably will start off with Cathay or Khorne. After a couple of campaigns though it's probably back to mortal empires until the HWH3 equivalent is out.

Very much so. I won't be able to fully dive in due to a busy schedule, but Total War Warhammer 2 is my most played game ever on Steam.

I do recommend Lionheart's videos for newcomers. He's one of the easiest to come into.

And I'll be starting as Kislev. Very easy choice for me.

Medieval 2 with the Kingdoms expansion. It's not as pretty as the others but it's a great game. Most would say the best Total War game.

Just saw WH3 will be available day one on Game Pass. Is this a standalone game or a story that carries over from the previous WH games? Might try this one for free to see if I like the genre. But then I’m afraid that if I start with this one and enjoy it, it might be difficult to go back and play some of the older ones (assuming the gameplay has gotten better throughout the years).

Each of the three has a different set of base factions in a different part of the world.

Warhammer 1 focused on the Empire (think German Holy Roman Empire, Vampire Counts, Orcs, and Dwarfs

Warhammer 2 focused on Dark Elves, High Elves, Seraphin (lizardmen), and Skaven (rat me , and the best)

Warhammer 3 will focus on the various Chaos factions, Kislev (think Russia), Cathay (think Far East) and the Ogor Kingdoms.

Each game has a stand-alone campaign for each faction that tells a story.

If you owned Warhammer 1 and Warhammer 2, they combined the maps after 2’s release to create a giant map that serves as a giant free for all factions released. There is story in this free for all though. Warhammer 3 will be included into that eventually but at first it’s just releasing it’s standalone campaigns.

The gameplay has changed mainly in making factions feel much much much much more unique in every game so far.

Whereas in Warhammer 1, the armies were distinct and some of the campaign functions were unique, you were still basically doing similar things most of the time.

In Warhammer 2, you have a faction like the Skaven that can only occupy destroyed cities, and only be found by searching for destroyed cities. Or you have the dark elves that have their slave torture ships that serve as cities

It's standalone. With Total War games like this one, there's no real continuous storyline. The game does a great job of rewarding you for owning previous games and DLCs as they all carry forward into newer content.

Give the game a try on Game Pass. If you've never played one before, it'll certainly give a lot of hours getting used to the systems and methods of controls. I would recommend spending before/as you start to play watching some of the youtubers linked above. There's tons of great content that will help get into the games easier.

just to add a bit here for the new player folks - make sure to check out the prologue campaign in #3.

They did a good job walking you through a lot of the basics of campaign / settlement building etc and its got a decent story as well.

While it was predictable, I really enjoyed the prologue story as well. And the ending was really cool. I really like the…. guy (to not spoil it) whose involved.

WH3 was fun but I'm waiting for them to incorporate mortal empires. Once they do that I'll get back into it. I'm all about that Dwarven empire baby

my man! totally agree that mortal empires is when the game is really going to take off, but I'm still very much enjoying it.

and as far as the Dawi go, not only can I not wait to do a lore appropriate dwarf re-conquest of all the lost holds, but I'm super stoked for the chaos dwarf race pack to come out as well.

Played through the prologue of WH3. Loved most of it! Why did it take me so long to try out this series? I knew going in that if I liked it, I would probably be more interested in an historic setting instead of fantasy. So after finishing up the proloque, I turned around and bought TW: Three Kingdoms and multiple DLC for it. Installed some graphical update mods and started it up a few nights ago. Great games!

Rome: Total War is one of my favorite pc games of all time. It’s an awesome mix of real time strategy battles and turn based strategy empire building.
