If you are really patient and want a really really really in-depth simulator, you might want to give these a try. The games eventually bog down gameplay wise and computing wise (computing a turn can take a really long time) but it's so much more satisfying when things work out. In To End All Wars, to make a powerful army, it will probably take at the very least a year in-game. My latest strategy game addictions.

Are they still making an expansion to Gettysburg? That game was the shite and I'd love to see it on a larger scale.

Do you mean Ultimate General Gettysburg? If so, they're not similar at all. UGG is fun but simple and yes, just a map of the town. Civil War 2 is huge. Which is actually kinda a problem but kinda awesome. There are hundreds of towns and by one year in, you'll have about 50-100 units you need to keep track of every turn. Armies can't get to big because resources are scarce and if you pull too many units to Virginia or tennesse, the enemy will start invading Texas or West Virginia. A great thing is it is really really hard to get the upper hand.
The main issue is mid games, each turn can take up to 15 minutes to complete and it takes about as long to compute.
There's a game called alea jacta est set during roman times that fixes this problem. You generally never have more than 30 units and you can finish a game in a couple of days. I like it a lot but it got lower reviews so I left it out.
