The city of Frisco, TX (far north Dallas suburb) granted $1.2 million to a group to start the National Videogame Museum. I took my kids recently and we had a good time.

The museum takes you through the history of video gaming with plenty of consoles set up for visitors to play. It was funny to watch how hard it was for the Minecraft generation to get passed more than two or three Pitfall screens. Early home computers, handheld games, an InfoCom section, game paraphernalia...it was all there.

At the end of the museum, there is an 80's arcade with lots of favorites like PacMan, DigDug, Missile Command, Battlezone, etc. The room is set up like an old arcade where the machines are almost touching each other and there's just enough room for someone to pass by if someone is playing on either side of the aisle. The only thing missing was period music. Games were 25 cents each and you can leave the museum and return with a wristband.

If you are a DFW resident or visiting the area, I would recommend checking it out.

Pat the NES Punk was talking about it on his podcast. I will be in Dallas for the next few months. Might have to spot by one day.

Isn't the museum just the combined collection of 3 really big collectors?

I'll be surprised if kids from this generation can even turn the NES console on and get the game to start.

The only background info I got was that the city of Frisco sponsored it by putting up the money. If it's from 3 private collections, hats off to those collectors because there's a ton of stuff.

It's in the same building as the Discovery Center (aka kids' museum) and it's also next to a spur of the railroad tracks that put Frisco on the map. There are a bunch of railroad cars and engines on the tracks because I think they are trying to put together a train museum too.

Babe's Fried Chicken restaurant is right around the corner and that's worth a stop.
