I have never played any of the games in the series but clearly it gets a lot of love.
What makes it so great? What games does it compare to?

Fallout is just incredibly nostalgic, gameplay/words doesn't do it justice. You must play it

The game is 3 times bigger than Skyrim, so you won't run out of content until 2018, you're free to do what you want when you want, like any good RPG. Bout 50 or so weapons with over 700 weapon mods.
Can build your own shelters and basically create a settlement . 2000 programmed names into the game so, if your name is common, it will be said in game. It's been seven years in production, so odds are it won't be buggy as shite like most games of that magnitude are. Go watch the trailer. I melted when I saw it.
Think of it like Grand Theft Auto. There IS a main story, but you're too busy doing stuff.

Definitely Fallout 3. New Vegas was buggy and everything about it was meh compared to Fallout 3.

The sheer amount of stuff you can do in Fallout is great. The campy story lines and interactions with characters are great. The graphics should be great on the new system. The customization and character development aspects are great.
