A full remake of the original game is in the works by Night Dive Studios. A pre-alpha demo has been released and looks incredible. System Shock 3 is also (finally) becoming a reality, and has been licensed out to OtherSide Entertainment. Many of the people involved in making the original two games are involved with both projects. Obviously, this is pretty much the best news of all time.

I have to wonder how well a game like this holds up. This was one of the earliest games to mix RPG and FPS elements and also one of the first games to tell a story through audio logs left by NPC's.

Those were 2 of the big innovations of the original AND its sequel (which itself added the unreliable narrator trope). It's a testament to how good they both were at release that so many games have since adopted those mechanics, but can that hold up today? Not unless they do something really unique with it.

The good news is that this will give people a chance to play System Shock 1 without having to play the original version of it. Even back then, its controls were ungainly.

As excited as I am by the news of the new games, I can't argue with your statement. It would be incredible if someone followed up one of the three or four greatest games of all time with another one even approaching the same level of quality. But, a man can dream!
