Starting Mass Effect 1 for the first time

Played the hell out of ME2 a few times.
Started ME3, but I don't have the time to play as much, and the negativity of the ending pushed me to play a ton of multiplayer for awhile, and never got back into the single player.
Just downloaded ME1 as I want to do a full play through from the beginning. Obviously the combat is less evolved and I'm not as happy with the inability to completely direct my squad mates. Any tips or suggestions on how to make the most of my playthrough?
Also, obligatory @#$# the mako.

I really like ME2, especially the characters and design of the ending, but I honestly think ME1 is better.
More open world feel. More choices.
That's just my opinion from playing them over and over.

I still think ME1 is one of the best games of the past decade. Hated the sequels honestly, but loved the Mako and planetary exploration which everyone else hated.....so yeah.

ME1 is the best game in the series for a variety of reasons, the sequels were shite

Talk to your friends often to get new quests.
Go about it slowly and methodically. You don't want to rush the game if you want to as much out if it as possible.
Also, save often. There are interactions you might want to correct or quests you may want to do the optional actions on.
Have fun.
As for class choice, experiment early on and restart the play through to try the others before you get too far.
I always liked the biotic powers.

I was terrible at Mass Effect 1 combat. Could never keep the AI partners alive.
Also, totally skipped like 97% of the side missions. I didn't even know you could land on planets until after I beat the game.
I just kept playing the main story, putting off the side missions. I was expecting a 20-30 hour campaign, but the main story is only like 10 hours long.

The average time to beat the main story is something like 15-20 hours.
If you are a completionist, the game is 40+ hours long.

See, this is why I want to go back and replay ME1.
