Please let this be true.
I blame a lot of this on the success of VII, while it was a great game, I feel that it's popularity brought the series into the mainstream and from then on the developers tried to make all the rest like it.

It might be true, then they're going to sell it on consoles that feature sports and FPS's and other non-RPG fans. Again, missing their core audience.
I hope they are more mindful of their choices this time.

Keeping my fingers crossed for Lost Odyssey 2 to be announced at E3. I know it's not SE but I think Lost Odyssey was the last good JRPG that I've played.
As far as the FF series goes, I tried but just couldn't get into any of them after FFX.

Side note I did like some of the changes involved with FF 12. The ability to pick and choose fights, hunting logs, classes, etc. combat and story...meh.
