I got the game from Steam but I cannot play it. My laptop is over 3 years old and has had a lot of issues with overheating and shutting down just from watching videos. My battery was shot and I read that might be the issue. I replaced the battery but still get overheating issues. When the game does work, it moves extremely slowly. There is a massive lag between when I click my mouse to move to a part of the map and when it actually moves. And then the computer shuts off about 10 minutes in regardless. Any suggestions on how best to fix this issue? Getting a new laptop is out of the question. Would a new video card help at all?

Maybe, but if overheating is your problem I'd look at dusting it out and putting a small fan on it. This game will run hot on a rig that isn't keeping that air flow moving through it.
The other thing you might want to look at is how hard your processor is working. It may not be able to handle the game.
More ram is always better so you could upgrade that and also make sure you are running the latest drivers for your video card.
I'm constantly tweaking my rig to stay up to date. Most of it involves free shite you can do.
You can also check your graphic settings inside the game. It maybe too high for your rig and gumming up the works for you.

Really want to buy the game soon, but I need to upgrade my laptop too. Loved Rome: Total War. I haven't played a Total War game since though.

from the reviews and videos, the game wasn't finished.
horrible glitches, battles not working, flags attacking, archers attacking infantry, mediocre graphics on high settings.
take a look at the soldiers faces, during a close up, they all look like they have down syndrome.
The angry dude, said it was so bad, the glitches and stuff that he just laughed.

This, and day one DLC is why I decided not to get it.
Best part? Day one DLC is 7.99 for things that should have been in the game already!

all games need patches at release...shrug...I'm having fun...maybe my expectations are just lower then the common PC gamer.
I HATE the flags however...the random placement of those on the open battlefields really pisses me off.
