PS4 vs Xbox1 for Christmas present. Need advice!

Hi gaming board. Never post here but figured I would ask for some advice regarding a Christmas present. I'm not sure which would be the best console to buy right now between the Xbox 1 and the PS4. Console will be for a 27 year old who likes games like Battlefield, Fallout, and FIFA. He previously had a PS2, Xbox 360, and several Nintendo consoles.
Things I'm curious about:
- games: exclusive titles mostly
- online play: cost per month, network reliability, ease of finding games and playing with people
- VR: worth it or wait and see?
- controllers: which has the better feel, especially for FPS games? I've personally played with Xbox and PlayStation controllers in the past and found Xbox controllers to feel more natural but I don't know how the current gen controllers feel.
- user interface, apps, etc: which is more user friendly? Any significant difference in app support?
- graphics
- anything else a prospective buyer should know
Any and all advice is appreciated. I haven't bought a console for myself or anyone for that matter in almost a decade so I feel out of the loop at this point. I will probably base my decision on whatever conclusions can be drawn from this thread.

Does he like baseball video games? If so, go Ps4.
Regardless, and I have both systems, I think Ps4's exclusives (Last of Us, Uncharted, MLB the Show) blow Xbone's out of the water, but that's just my opinion.

Same exact price. Psn was cheaper, but had a price hike a few months ago.
I'm not going to answer all of your questions because the rest are pretty much personal preference, but I'd say get whatever system that they person's friends play on most. I bought an Xbone first, but then found out a good number of friends went PS4, so I bought it later and I still play both, but definitely my Ps4 more.
I don't personally think one is better than the other either, but with the new systems (Ps4 Pro, Xbone whatever), there are probably more educated people here on the subject.

you've put a lot of thought into this and seem like a good friend to whoever you are buying the console for. The main thing you need to find out is what type of gamer this person is.
Do they play competitive games or just strictly single player games? Which console do their friends play on?
If they are a single player type of person, we can help you decide PS4 vs XBone based on what games you think they like.

PS4 has better exclusives IMO.

Cost is the same. Network reliability is pretty similiar but the max download speed for PSN appears to be quite a bit more limited than Xbone. IF he is into multiplayer games with friends though, the system his friends use should be a large factor into your decision.

- controllers:

- user interface, apps,

I find the trigger on the PS4 controller to be a bit too sensitive for my liking. That's just a personal preference though, both controllers are fine.

PS4 has better interface. Xbone has more apps, PS4 has PSVue if you want a good cable replacement.

If you're going with Xbox, might as well get the One S. If Playstation, stick with PS4. Skip the PS Pro.

So it's better to get the 500gb Ps4 with a bundle instead of the 1TB Ps4 pro?
I mostly play single player but when my son is over at my house I'm sure he will be playing on line

The Pro is about $100 more. Sure its better technically, but not $100 better in my opinion. I've watched some videos on it and it has some technical issues as well, mainly getting extremely hot. I'd be worried about that long term. If you already have a 4k tv and extra money to spend its probably ok. More of a money issue for me.
LINKHere's a video on some of the technical issues with the PS Pro. I already had to buy two 360s so this kinda scares me off.

xbox has the superior controller
xbox has numerous xbox 360 games as backward compatible
xbox is integrated into the pc gaming ecosystem
xbox seems to have the better network reliability
ps4 may have better exclusives depending on if you like those games
ps4 has slightly better user interface but not as many apps
ps4 is slightly better with graphics
VR will be better with time. not worth worrying about right now
fwiw went into two different game stores here locally for black friday and they didn't have one used xbox one for sale, but had lots of ps4's and wii U's. seems the backward compatible capability has made used xbones a hot commodity
full disclosure I have both the xbone and ps4. prefer the xbone

I'm sure he will want to play some FIFA online with friends, I know he has one or two that own PlayStations. He's also into some single player games like Dishonored and Fallout. Not sure if console makes a big difference for those games.
For those who have both systems, what makes you prefer one over the other? I am sure a lot of this is subjective (even in these few posts I've seen differing opinions on which controllers are better) but I appreciate the different view points. Thanks for the awesome responses so far.

Xbox Live Gold is cheaper at BF. I just paid 32 for a 12 month sub and I've never seen PSN below 47-48.
Having said that, 16 bucks a year shouldn't tip the scales one way or another.

plus the xbox free games included with your online multiplayer subscription are usually better than those offered by playstation

I don't know anyone that uses a playstation controller when gaming on pc. they all use the xbox controller or the new steam controller

I bought my Xbone first and literally all I use it for now is FIFA. Aside from that it is PS4 90% of the time.
However, I wouldn't necessarily say it's because i like the PS4 more. Like I said above, I have more friends on PS4.
It honestly comes down to preference. Anyone you ask is likely to be somewhat biased because they're brand loyal more than anything.

I used to be 100% for Xbox, but now that I have a ps4 I've sorta swapped my stance. If I had to pick between the XB1 or ps4 I'd get the latter

I was a big playstation fanboy always bought playstation stuff before I bought an xbone fwiw
the xbone pc ecosystem integration going forward is what convinced me to trade in all my non exclusive ps4 games and buy all cross over games for my xbone. saw where they were going and decided to make the switch early.

I have both but I prefer the Xbox simply because the controller is more comfortable imo. The PS4 is fine though and if I could use an Xbox controller with it I would prefer it.

Think I'm gonna get the PS4 for my son for Christmas (it will stay at my house) and get the Scorpio later on next year.
I can get either the PS4 or Xbone for $225 and the PS4 comes with uncharted 4

I can't decide between picking up the One S or waiting for the Scorpio. I have a feeling I'll just end up picking up the S, but I'm still undecided.

I went ahead and got the PS4 with uncharted 4 bundle and I also got my son watchdogs 2 and dishonored 2.
