PS4 DVD/Blu-ray Playback Question

Okay...so I've been having this problem for a while but have finally grown curious about it due to recent developments. For the longest time, whenever I'd insert a Blu-ray or DVD disc into my PS4, the system would "crash" and go to a black screen. I could hear my PS4 trying (and failing) to read the DVD/Blu-ray. HOWEVER, it seems to read some Blu-rays just fine. For instance...every time I insert newer releases like The Force Awakens or Rogue One into the PS4, the playback works perfectly. Every time I put in an older disc like A Bridge Too Far or Apollo 13, the PS4 "crashes" once again. It reads and plays my games perfectly. My mind is blown. What do ya'll think could be the issue?

Might be that the discs aren't a recognized format.
I don't understand a lot of this, but it may give you a direction to turn.
