If you enjoyed the Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights series back in the day, you've got to check out Pillars of Eternity. Been pounding it for about a week now and I really enjoy it. Prolly dating myself here, but it's one of the closest versions to the old school pen & paper D&D stuff I played in the 80's.

I downloaded Pillars of Eternity based on a lot of praise it has been receiving. It is definitely different than most other RPGs I have played....I just have yet to really get into it.
Any tips?

I'm currently 40+ hours in my first playthrough of PoE. Absolutely love the game so far. Here are some tips:
Ciphers are badass.
Druids are also badass.
Rangers kind of suck.
Don't listen to people when they say that wizards suck. They do kind of suck, but that's because people have no idea how to build them.
Don't listen to people when they say that rogues suck. Rogues are fricking awesome, and fun to micromanage.
Don't get sucked into the 'backstab' trap. Don't take backstab ever. Sneak attack is your friend.
Make use of weapons that bypass damage reduction.
Read up on enemy resistances and stuff.
Mental binding heavily tips combat in your favor.
Crowd control spells >>> damage spells.
The game seems to get easier as you get higher in level. The first few levels were a bit rough, until I got a full party.
Spec your party to do specific things. And have them focus on those things. Don't make 'jack of all trades' adventurers.
Don't be afraid to create an adventurer at an inn. I ended up creating a rogue to act as my primary damage dealer, and the game got a lot easier for me.
Use items that summon things.
Do you like reading? Have fun reading.
One I finish this playthrough I am probably going to attempt the Triple Crown, which is insane. And I can't wait.

They are much slower and more meticulous. They definitely are not for everyone.

Have you played Divinity: Original Sin? It's along the same lines of the CRPG games you seem to be in to. I got really far into it, and have loved it, but I stopped once I found out that an "enhanced edition" is coming out later this year. If you have purchased the regular version for PC, you get the enhanced edition for free. Which is good. I have a lot of respect for Larian for doing that.

I take it you didn't read all the codex in origins.

I liked them for free xp
I just scanned most of them. Codex is one thing. Reading conversations between characters is too much.

I don't read any of those damnit things. It's one thing if they are relevant but often times they aren't.

Save...and 5 seconds later Save again. Once you kill anything, save...and save and save and save (quick saves).
space bar to pause in combat and make sure everyone does what they're supposed to is an absolute must. I sometimes will pause, set everything up and unpause for what feels like an eternity and then pause to find that half my people haven't even had time to do what I told them to do, although I think there's a way to set up chain commands, I just haven't done it yet.
Did I mention save your game yet? Cus I think that can'tn be stated enough

Hell, I still play on Neverwinter Nights 2 persistent worlds. Some of the best RP and DM events can be had on the 'Baldurs Gate: The Sword Coast Chronicles' PW. Plus you can get NWN2 from GOG for like $10.

Nwn 2 you say? I beat the game, and then completely lost interest. Are the mods good? I played the ever living frick out of some mods on NWN.

i must be too much of a BGII fan boy. I just cant get into it or force myself to play more than 30 minutes. I hate the lack of healing in combat and I havent gotten into the story enough, just feels like mindless questing in the early stages. have owned since launch and only 8 hours played.

I grew up on games like this but it is really hard to keep my attention now with 499 walls of text. Hard to go back to reading everything after several years of voice acting in most games.

At first I was really digging POE but now I don't have the interest anymore to play it. Not sure what it is, but something about it that I can't get into...

As far as I'm concerned, Baldurs Gate: The Sword Coast Chronicles and Tales of Moonsea are the two best persistent worlds for NWN2. There are no walls of text like in the single player game and if you are into roleplay then you can have lots of fun on these servers. Dungeon Masters also hold events (quests, intrigue, etc) to keep things lively. My experience is mainly in BG:TSCC and in that game you'll want to team up with others to take on some of the harder areas and monsters as going it alone you will end up on the Fugue Plane more often than not.
My latest character is a pure fighter, follower of Garagos, with an intense hatred of Orcs. I'll start tonight on the Fugue Plane as I was surrounded and killed by a bunch of fricking gibberlings in a cave while going it alone last night.
Edit: Since gamespy has now shut down, you can add the following lines to your hosts file to bypass authentication:
0.0.0.0 nw2master.bioware.com
0.0.0.0 nwn2.master.gamespy.com
If not, until it times out, it will appear your computer has locked up when it tries to authenticate multiplayer. Adding the above will cause authentication to immediately fail thereby allowing you to use 'Direct Connect' to get on the PW server of your choice.
