oh wow.

the cheapest 1070 on PCPartpicker right now is $444

OP, to elaborate on what blue is referring to, the mining craze of digital commodities, like ethereum and bitcoin, has caused video cards to go out of stock everywhere.

at the end of may I got a 1070 for $370, and right now you cant buy one new for less than $444

the 1080s aren't that efficient at mining, so their price has remained stable, starting at $500

the AMD Cards are all sold out, they are most efficient for mining. don't bother searching.

below the 1070 is a 1060 6 GB, which can be had for $250 but aren't that great, but may be enough to suit your needs.

How exactly does bitcoin mining affect video cards? Just want to get an understanding on these things.

Miners using video cards to "mine", which is basically solving mathematical calculations, millions of them.

GPUs have the ability to do this efficiently. People create entire setups of multiple GPUs just to mine for bitcoin and ethereum all day.

So, miners buy up all the AMD Radeon cards, so now every hobbyist like you or me are forced to buy NVidia cards. well now those are going out of stock too, because miners are scooping those up as well.

with bitcoin and ethereum prices surging, a lot of people want to mine it. COuple that with school ending and people building computers as graduation gifts or just to play all summer, along with regular demand, the shortage we are seeing now is created.

usually there is more wiggle room, its not just $250 card or $500 card. But at this exact moment, that's what we have.

AMD Radeon cards: cant find em, no go

1060 6 GB: $250 (this may be enough for you)

1070s: overpriced and going out of stock at the moment.

1080s: $500, unaffected by the mining craze due to inefficiency

1080TI: $670. pretty pricey but a damn strong card

PCpartpicker.com and youtube are all you need, plus about 4 hours to put everything together.

Miners are ruining the hobby right now. The gains aren't like 2013/2014 profits when mining was yumyum. So really don't understand the craze.

Edt: Look at used cards or CPUs from sellers with great feedback on eBay. Could save you a few bucks.

Decide your budget and what resolution you want to game at and go from there.

It's extremely profitable right now, I would say far better then the litecoin/doge/etc era. shite, I want to set up my nvidia cards to mine and make like $400/month, but I would have to sideload linux and some other things that I dont feel like doing

I'm talking solely BTC.

I don't follow the others because no one accepts those for drugs.

Check out ILikeLSUToo's guide here. I'm not sure how up-to-date it is, but there is a ton of info to help you know what you are looking at/for with the various hardware pieces.

And if you the thread is full of discussion on the latest PC building stuff if you look at the last few pages. Also you can post there for help and people like ILike off suggestions.

Also, PCPartPicker is a good resource for putting a cost effective build together.

Like others have said, determining your budget is one of the first things you need to do, along with the purpose of the PC (just gaming? video editing? tigerdroppings browsing only?). An $800 build is a lot different than a $1000 build or a $1200, and obviously a $2000 build. Also, whether or not you need a monitor can have a big impact on your build as well (my monitor was ~25% of the total cost).

The important thing is building a balanced system for the budget you have. For example, if you spent $150 extra for a better CPU, but your primarily gaming and you're rig is limited by the graphics card... you would have been better off with a lower grade CPU and putting that $150 on a better graphics card. There are a lot of people here than can help sort out where you should be on what components to be balanced. All you have to do is ask!

You can get an RX 580 for about 180 less.

If your monitor doesn't support at least 2K, then the 1070 is overkill. You won't see much in the way of benefits from it until your screen can support the higher end.

I'm incredibly happy with my RX 580. I run Overwatch smooth as silk on my PC.

i7-6700k
RX 580
512 SSD for the OS
2x 2TB Drives for data
16GB G.Skill DDR4 RAM

The point is, if you have no intention of going beyond a 1080P monitor, then the 1070 is more than you'll probably need for a very long time. If you plan on getting a 2K or 4K monitor, then I would save up for the 1070 or 1080 models.
