I personally feel that remasters are simply a way to cash in on consoles not having backwards compatibility.

To be fair, I understand from a business standpoint why they went with this method

1) Remastered games already have an established fan-base that will (mostly) rebuy it for nostalgia
2) Some people are graphics-nazis and will refuse to play a game if it is not HD or in modern (PS3/360+) graphics.

I appreciate ports since they allow you to play a game on a different system entirely (ie PC, Tablet etc.)

But I want to hear some different opinions on the matter. I personally feel that its to exploit my nostalgia as a fan so that I can buy the same game to have everything on one console (which is a flawed premise itself- Kindom Hearts Remakes anyone?)

I didn't pay $400 for a new console to play old games.

Remasters are a total marketing ploy. Very much the same as Square and Nintendo's need to make you buy the same ported games over and over again to have access to them, even if they don't improve them.

I'd like to see them go the direction of some Digital HD copies - ie DisneyAnywhere. I have an Account on DisneyAnywhere, can register my movies there, then I can access it on Amazon, Google, etc. That's perfect. If they make improvements, maybe I can play versions over time - if I want to - or pay a small fee for the new or alternative updates.

However, when a game is more niche, or is a couple of generations old and they are releasing a sequel or new title, I don't see a problem with Ports to bring people up to speed.

The Skyrim remaster is ridiculous honestly. That game is barely 6 years old.

BUT in the end, it's only as successful as long as people buy into it.

This drives everything. As long as people are willing to spend the money they'll do it and be successful.

I just never understood those who want backwards compatibility. Why not keep your old system? The idea that "remasters" are new is laughable. There were dozens of remakes and completely different versions of the exact same title spread across NES, SNES, Sega, and PlayStation (among others). Watch AVGN sometime on that subject.

I'd much rather they work on innovation for the next gen than dumb the system down and/or waste resources to play a 10-20 year old PS game.

At least it offers mods on Xbox one.

Generally speaking I don't buy them but it can be neat to see your favorite old games with modern graphics or updated gameplay. Examples of this include Super Mario All Stars on the SNES and Metroid Zero Mission on the GBA, which has entirely replaced the original NES Metroid for me.

There are also some titles that felt like they were really pushing their original systems to their breaking point like Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 and The Last of Us on PS3. I've enjoyed playing their updated versions more than the originals because the re-releases have good, steady frame rates.

And, as was mentioned, it can be a way to get people who missed out on the original releases up to speed for when a new entry in the series is approaching.

My position is if you don't want them, don't buy them. However, I see a lot of people on this board taking the stance that re-makes are bad but how many here would turn down a (true) HD remake of Ocarina of Time or an updated Dark Souls or Demon's Souls with updated graphics? I think many here would bite. Re-makes are "ruining gaming" only when it's not your favorite game being re-made.

If fans weren't buying them, they wouldn't sell them. I think the focus should be on new games as opposed to remasters, but remasters do allow new audiences to play the games for the first time. Even for people who have played the games before, a lot of times the remaster looks more like what they remember. PS2 games looks objectively worse blown up in HD and even PS3 games look pixelated on a big enough 1080P or 4K TV. Some remasters even come with enhancements like 60 FPS, better visuals, all the DLC, etc. Depending on how they're priced, they can be a pretty good value whether you've never played the game or even if you just want to own a copy for your new sytem.

I never would've played the last of us if not for the remastered ps4 version, and its one of my top 10 games of all time

Same with my buddy after buying the uncharted ps4 bundle

Remasters are usually awesome. I woulda voted for Hillary if she promised a full remake of MG & MG2.

I am going to buy the Remaster/Port or whatever it is of KH 1&2 for PS4 regardless of price, but forever on Amazon the pre-order price before Prime is only $50. I was shocked they aren't asking for a full $60, because I EASILY would have paid for it lol.

I guess it's more than likely because the last HD remaster for the exact same games was on PS3, but who knows.

Maybe you can't because your old system broke or stopped working. Maybe you didn't have the old system that the game originally came out for.

Also have you connected an old system to a modern HDTV recently? I have. Those old games look like shite.

The Skyrim remaster is understandable. It's one of the greatest games of all time, and the remaster offers enhanced visuals (whether or not they actually make the game look better is up to interpretation imo) and mod support on consoles. I first played through Skyrim on PS3, but I bought it on PC much later with all the DLC.

It's when they remaster stuff like Bullet Storm that gets me. DMC4 and Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6 are in that boat as well, but at least those remasters are only $20 brand new.

Never paid for one and don't plan on ever buying one. Updated graphics isn't a selling point for me and I keep old systems.

I guess if they updated Lemonade I might be compelled to by it.

If developers want to upgrade and clean up my favorite games from the past I'm buying.

Modern Warfare 2 and Battlefield 3 (unlikely) remasters would be cash cows.

And another thing...these remasters might help some developers rediscover what gamers like and don't like with reskinning their best titles from the past.

I love remasters.
