A new patent published by the USPTO yesterday details an invention by Nintendo that would allow it to emulate its mobile game consoles, including the Game Boy line of devices specifically, in other settings, including on seat-back displays in airplanes and trains, and on mobile devices including cell phones. The patent is an updated take on an older piece of IP, so it’s not an entirely new idea, but it’s still very interesting to consider that Nintendo could have renewed interest in the idea of running its own back catalogue on many different kinds of screens.

This is awesome.

I feel like Nintendo leaves just an absolute ton of money on the table by not attacking the nostalgia factor. They could make SOOOO much money by putting old games on mobile devices. Square Enix is doing it successfully right now with early FFs

Nintendo is nostalgia for me and everyone I know. When it comes to gaming now they aren't in my discussion and I don't see that changing because they chose a different group to appeal toward.

But they'd immediately enter back to my market if they retooled n64 or game boy games into mobile device gaming

frick that.

most of their games would suck arse on the vast majority of mobile devices.

you need buttons to play shite like Mario, Zelda, and Metroid.

I've tried and tried to get used to touch controls on phones/tablets and it just sucks arse to use for games like Sonic and The Simpsons Arcade where you have to use those bullshite virtual controls. Even old RPGs frustrate the ever living hell out of me with the control schemes you are forced to use.

Fwiw, you can already get great Gameboy emulators on your Android phone. I use My Oldboy! And it works well for me.

Because Nintendo actually cares about the quality of their products and not simply whoring out. No fricking way would Mario or Zelda be anywhere close in quality to what it is on an actual gaming device. Plus it's counter-productive to their handheld gaming devices.

Squirtel is on both. Probably the most well known exclusives for each is Magmar(blue) and Electabuzz(red)
