Your weekend schedule is closer to my everyday schedule

I stayed up all night playing Civ II a few times when I was in college
What makes the Civ series so great is how well they balance the game. Everything you do comes with a price tag (for example, in II being a democracy was great for economic production but it was a lot harder to sustain a military and you had stupid peaceniks wanting to appease the AI civs.)

I hate playing with barbarians. I usually go the lame route and turn them off, especially if I'm playing with some friends since none of us like playing with them.
What mods do you use? I really like infoaddict and playing on real earth

I think the only mod I've ever used was advanced settings. I like the randomness of barbarians and it allows me to promote my units by containing multiple encampments at once.

I did a number of mods on II. I changed the names of some of the civs. I used the Israelites instead of the French, and even hacked the game to show a portrait of King David in the throne room. (I used some DLL editing tool I found on a fan site). I also changed some of the dialogue in the diplomatic negotiations and changed Wine to Beer in the resources. II is my favorite game in the series...I always go back to it.
Has anyone here ever tried the One City Challenge? That's where you limit yourself to one city and try to win the game.

I've never done the one city challenge because it's ridiculous. The only viable option would be to try a culture victory and to appease other civs so as to not roll over you.

Might not be viable on all versions of the game, but believe it or not you can win a colonization victory with one city. Very hard, but that's the point.
You either need strong defenses or the Great Wall/UN which forces other civs to accept your treaties. With only one city, your power ranking won't be Supreme so you don't have to worry about sneak attacks.
I guess you could theoretically do the OCC by conquest, if you raze each conquered city or build settlers until it disbands.

I usually go with the French, Greece, or Japan for the one-city challenge.
French: Culture bonuses add up QUICK with the increase in culture production as well as faster border expansion. The expansion is great because it gives you more cushion from the enemy.
Greece: City-state influence is great. With NiGHTS you get a wonder production bonus as well...always nice.
Japan: Bushido. Is. Awesome. When you only have one unit producing city, every unit is crucial. Bushido lets all your units fight at full strength even when hurt. Samurais are solid as well. The Zero kicks royal arse. You won't lose any air fights.

Greece fits my strategy beautifully. The hoplite and companion calvary are awesome early units.

Yeah I like Greece but never fully use the hoplite because I can't get them made early enough. By the time I have enough to be effective they're too underpowered. I love France because the border expansion and extra culture. I try to have 4-5 cities as quickly as possible...that's an extra 10 culture AND they expand rapidly.

Do you know what the GOTY bundle includes? I just picked it up in a trade, but I don't know if it's worthwhile for me to try and retrade and buy the DLC, or just keep it.
I already have the base game and mongolia DLC (along with G&K)

There are a few civilizations not included in base + G&K along with some maps.

Can you still get the Civ Chronicles set? I have that...it's the only way to play I on a current computer. Even II doesn't always run unless you're using a virtual machine.

Just got finished playing it... That shite was hard and very annoying. You want to expand but you cant!
It also makes it difficult that the computer can expand while you're stuck with one city. Luckily I was playing with a friend so we had two cities. Got our first ever cultural victory

For those interested Civ 5 and many of it's add ons are on sale on Green man right now.

Now this causes a dilemma for those with vanilla. Buy now, or wait til the expansion comes out for the "this really is the everything" platinum edition?

There will be a good deal on G&K at some point, it sounds like the new expansion as well as G&K will make for a different experience if you've only played vanilla.
