So I like to rent games at Redbox to try them out before I buy them...This past week, I rented one from the Kiosk at the Walgreens on Essen at Picardy...I grabbed the disc and rolled out...I didn't check it until I got home...here's what happened...

The last person to rent the game before me, scanned the cover, printed it out and cut the print out, placed it back in the Case with an old Audio CD, then returned it to the Kiosk.

I called RedBox to inform them of what happened....They gave me a credit for the game and took the "Scanned" one out of service....

I know TLDR, moral of the story is, check your package at the Kiosk.

Anyone with a similar experience?

They did tell me they would check into who rented the game before I did...FYI

Seen this type of thing on reddit before, sucks.

I thought about this the other day. It would be really easy to do.

I rarely rent from redbox though. Just something about 90% of the people I always see huddled around the machines

This has been going on for a while, movies included. Not really much that can be done except report it right away and I guess they can go to the person who rented it previously.

The risk you run with an automated rental kiosk.

That sucks, but at least they didn't leave you holding the bag for it.

Sucks from Redbox's end, too. They probably can't prove who stole the disc, so they likely can't hold anyone responsible.

Exactly...especially if they get the game on a prepaid gift card and a fake email address.

Unless they use a prepaid Visa.

I can't fathom getting in my car and driving somewhere to rent a game/movie anymore.

I guess I forgot you can rent those without an account. What I do all the time to reserve the movie instead of browsing for something at the kiosk.

Yup had the same thing happen a couple years ago. Called customer service and got it resolved, but it was annoying.

Sounds like an easy way to get semi-free games.

So basically I can go rent a game or movie, call them and tell them that the disc I got was a fake, and they'll give me my money back and let me keep the "fake" disc? Then they'll blame whoever rented it last?

I know people who have been doing this since 2011 they use those prepaid Visa cards so it's untraceable. You don't even have to use an audio cd. Just cut out the copy(can be in black and white), just as long as that bar code shows.

Yeah, this is why I think it's impossible to trace. They can't prove you're telling them the truth. They've probably figured out it isn't worth spending money trying to investigate or prosecute.
