Man as long as I played I sucked at anything not zero clutter. Just could not build fast enough to play a game with no set rush time. Gave up on ranked games and just played 3v3 ZC with no rush 20 min and some mini games mixed in. Simspsons, lotr, and night of the living dead mainly. Cannon D was the shite too

This why I faced comps on bgh. I didn't have to rush build and I didn't have to worry about resources.

WoW.

The raids were one thing I really enjoyed, but the PVP before battlegrounds and the honor system came out were awesome.

Just getting a raid of 40 people and going to Terran Mill to wreak havoc was one of the most exciting things I've ever done in a video game.

Getting a raid together to defend Southshore was also a blast.

Probably EverQuest. When I first started, I believe EverQuest was only on its 5th expansion (out of 22 as of this post). I would've liked to play through the Kunark and Velious content when it was new even if back in those days, the population was healthy enough where there were plenty of people at all levels to group with.

I'd still play it today if the game as it was back then still existed. These days, there's not much of anyone playing who isn't at least level 80+.

Outside of that, probably World of Warcraft. I played EverQuest II from launch through WoTLK era in WoW, so I missed vanilla and Burning Crusade. In particular, I wish I would've played WoW during the Burning Crusade zones. Artistically, those are my favorite zones in the game.

Lastly, Anarchy Online. I played it a few years ago after it went Free to Play and thought the old school sci-fi theme was fantastic for an old school MMORPG. I really enjoyed my time in the game but it was pretty much dead back then. Outside of that, it reminded me of a sci-fi EverQuest.

Yeah. First time I jumped off the boat at Kunark stayed on edge of beach for 30 min trying to figure out how not to get killed. Good times

I forget what that zone was called, but there were some mobs in there that were scary as hell. Making the run to Lake of Ill Omen was always just a YOLO fest.

Gonna have to knight for UO pre trammel like I always do. Isn't it amazing how many mmos are generally remember by players as "pre" whatever? SWG comes to mind. Devs can't get out of their own way.

I never played it but wish I had. I am surprised SWG hasn't been mentioned yet.

Or maybe its just old to us by the time the dev's have to do something to stop subscription downturn.

I played WoW from opening day until TBC. I was in a guild that got top 10 world kills on bosses and stuff and was main tank so we would schedule raids in old dungeons just to get my toon a specific piece of gear so we could do better on newest content. Then TBC was going to come in and in an instant make all that time and investment sacraficed by like 50 people worthless.

So I sold my account to some guy in australia for 1500 dollars and bought a lvl 60 warrior that had shitty gear for 100 bucks and started over with new expansion, and quit soon after realizing the pointlessness of it all. Needless to say my guild was kinda mad.

ETA: I remember around black wing lair time or maybe a little before that, they had an instance where you could sneak in with rogues and open a chest and there was like a .1% chance that a certain sword would be in there that was the best for tanks at the time. We had like 12 people for 4 days resetting and running the instance for hours upon hours, finally got it and was probably one of the most exciting moments of my MMO career. We were all pumped as hell.

I wish I had a PC to run the old Republic when it came out. By the time I did it was too late for that game and the hype.

The Old Republic is fairly static for an MMO, meaning not a whole lot aside from quality of life changes is different from the way it was at launch. It's certainly not to the point of where you can quantify it in different eras like you can WoW or EQ. I guess you won't get to experience raiding areas like Eternity Vault as bleeding edge content, but those places are available on the raid finder and PUGs run them frequently.

Population is still strong, but it doesn't matter anyway as the story-based content is all done by yourself.

So many amazing zones in Kunark, sebilis is maybe the GOAT zone. I had a love/hate relationship with Karnors castle too.

I always think of EQ when i think of my first MMO, but in reality I played a tile-based game called Legends of Kesmai on the "Gamestorm" service that was technically my first. I spent so much time on that game, and I was of an age where i didn't fully understand how everything worked. The lack of understanding the "logic" made it such a magical experience to me. I actually still play that game every once in a while on a reproduced client by some avid fans/programmers. It's called Lands of Kes. They did an incredible job of recreating the game. Not a plug.

None

I was on for GW2 when it launched and after three days I was so far behind the wave of serious players I never got the same experience again.

All the MMOs I played hardcore were shut down, so I guess I have no dog in this fight. As far as long running MMOs go that are still up that I tried, it would have to be WoW.

RIP Star Wars Galaxies, RIP City of Heroes

This. I think this is the biggest problem that's never been solved. From a gameplay perspective, it ruins all MMO's (hence the pre-talk), as developers create more and more ways to try to keep the bingers involved (who they will lose anyway regardless), it continuously ruins the experience for anyone who can't put in 30 hours per week.

It sucks. I've seen some great MMO's totally downed by that, particularly EQ, DAoC and LOTRO. All three just started creating these complex systems that just kept any semblance of casual play out.

I think the MMOs that came closest to solving this were GW1 and CoH.

EQ always had a healthy leveling population at all level ranges partially because it took so damn long to level up and most classes couldn't do much without a party.

For this reason, games like EQ were able to avoid problems that newer MMOs have with that initial rush of players. You always felt like there were people around to do things with and it wasn't about reaching max level a sap to catch up with others.

That said, it becomes a problem when these games get older and more and more content is added on top of the old stuff. I don't see how anyone could start from scratch in modern EQ given the desolate population pre-level 80. New MMOs don't have this problem as progression is designed to be completed solo.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is the perfect example of a game absolutely destroyed by an over-reliance on group-based content. Pig there was a viable path to 55 for a solo player, the game would probably be around today. Most everyone who played it thought it was fantastic, but beyond that initial wave of players who dealt with numerous technical issues, most anyone who came after seemed to just hit a wall after level 35 or so
