My problem with EVE is that it takes so damn long to learn skills.
Posted on 8/13/10 at 12:49 pm to ULQQKED
In WoW our guild warrior main was out one night for a Kara run and his sister's 7 year old played him and did a better job.

I haven't played Eve but after all I've seen and read I just don't see how I could enjoy the game.

I really want to try that game now. Does anyone else on here play EVE?

It can be very boring at time and very exciting and brutal at times.

It definitely requires a whole different kind of mindset

I'm downloading the free trial now. I want to be one of the guys getting cleared by the corpse bulldozer.

Here
Actually have a window of it open now.
0.0 politics are a pain though.

This is very true.
I do like the why skills are trained...it suits those who can't spend a huge amount of time playing.
And another benefit of it is the fact that expansion packs come out at least once a year (usually twice), and it is free in the subscription
Which you can pay for with in game money, so if you are well situated you can play for free.

Chart gives WoW way too much credit

EVE was "meh". Try the free trial. I enjoyed this game for approximately 30 days. With the Dominion expansion, they eased the learning curve. They now have tutorials to explain how to do the important tasks, which they previously had not and it was trying to learn how to do anything.

Yeah back in the day it was very much a "Throw you into the deep end of the pool and see if you can learn to swim before drowning" philosophy
One of the greatest assets about this game is that everything is player driven. Where WoW has "events" planned by devs, "events" in this game is caused by player actions with no prompting by the Devs.
For example, a galaxy scale war just ended between some of the most powerful blocks in the game (Nothern Coalition...think a NATO type defensive group, and the Southern Coalition a group of basically everyone else who didn't like the fact that with the fall of the alliances Goonswarm and BoB due to spies getting in powerful positions and basically stealing everything and disbanding them in the latter, and the founder of the former just melting down the alliance in a rage quit, the Northern Coalition is by far the most powerful political power in the game. So they started a war w/ propaganda seeking to divide the NC. Putting pressure on perceived weak links in the alliance and things like that).
All done by folks just playing a game. CCP just takes a backseat for the most part....in fact, you can petition them to boost server resources to a particular star system if you expect a major conflict to occur there. And it is cool to see news stories on the log in screen talking about notewory things that you participated in like major battles with over a thousand players actively fighting with supercapital ships and their supports duking it out.
But yeah, its one of those games that I would definitely recommend trying out. It is VERY different to other MMOs, and tends to tailor for the more patient, mature types as EVE is not one to give instant gratification.
I think I read somewhere that the average player age is 27.

Volvagia I think you just added a new player to the community.

If you like, I can give you a referred trial...gives you another free week to play the game.

Damn.
Maybe I need to try this again. I tried it 2 years ago, loved the setting, but was put off by a lot of "What the hell do I do now?"

The trick to longevity is do your time in empire while you are skilling up, and then getting yourself into 0.0 ASAP. If you just spend all of your time running level 4 missions in empire and mining the crappy ores in there you are going to get burnt out.

Ha. This is exactly what I did. And I was like, "This is it?"

Well thar's your problem.
I actually quit the game from that tedium. Like 6 months later I came back, and thanks to the fact I was further along I was in a position to get myself in a corp that actually opened up some higher end stuff. What pushed me over the edge was after spending forever long mining fricking veldspar to afford to buy a hulk (I am an indy character), and 2 days later I get it popped in empire by somesome who suicide ganked me. Decided I was done with soloing in empire.
First it was a wormhole dwelling alliance, and then we joined a renting alliance within the NC (Looney Toons).
Can't imagine ever going back...too much isk to be made out there. Can easily pull 400 mill a week (30 day subscription costs like 300 mill). Hard to mine veldspar again after you've sunk your teeth into arknor and mercoxit.
(FWIW, IT, AAA, and Atlas formed the core of the "Southern Coalition" in the last war.) Pretty much all of the alliances in the segment north of R.A.G.E are NC.

I downloaded the trial last night and I've been going through the training missions. It's actually a lot of fun so far.
And I respect the "no carebear" aspect to the game. That's what I loved about Ultima Online.
