I don't know what goal I'm driving towards, and so many of the missions are just boring random crap.
Could not agree more! Every AC, for me, stops at around 60%-70%. I just get "lost", then get bored.
Regarding Mordor:
Killed my first warchief last night and got all the abilities on tier two that you can get through earning ability points.
The rest of my night was spent looting the currency. Don't know if you've noticed, but the very bottom row of the weapons upgrade menu has epic finishers for each weapon. You do NOT have to get all the upgrades above them before purchasing them. I want the stealth epic finisher (you dissapear for 15 seconds alowing unlimited executions), but it's 2500 murian. At 1950 now.
Environments really don't have much variation, and the map is actually really small, but that's ok. The mechanics are excellent and it's just...fun. I also ran away alot more last night. It gets difficult to kill the upper level chiefs in the middle of their stronghold without getting absolutely swarmed. I have found grabbing and interrogating those assholes as fast as possible works well. But some of them have to get their health really low before interrogation, which gives their minions time to show up.
Oh, and I tried to interrupt a fued between two captians and their gangs. That was an asskicking and eventual death. They ALL turned on me with the quickness, and the two assholes that did most of the dmage were given big promotions. I got revenge on one of them, the other has it coming to him tonight.

I believe there is a second map that is supposed to open up when you get to certain point in the story...if you notice the bottom of the first map, there are gates at the bottom center of the map

I did see that. I thought it was the black gate, but I think that is towards the Northwest corner of the current map. So I thought it may have been the final (or so) mission. That would be great if I'm only working with a portion of the map so far!

Yeah, if you move the cursor over it i think it says something about having to advance storyline.
And i also remember reading something that said something along the lines of when you get to the second map, that you can turn the orcs to fight for you instead of killing them.
ETA: That second part i posted was from this, and it doesnt say anything about the second map..
LINK
After spending its first half slowly revealing how Orc society works, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor allows players to jump in and affect matters more directly in its second half. You unlock the ability to "brand" Orcs, forcing them to fight on your side. This allows you to turn various captains against each other or even set up a power structure where you control the local warchiefs.
ETA part 2: From the same link
Shadow of Mordor also has all the requisite, expected attractions of a modern open-world game. Its two massive maps are beautiful, full of interesting landmarks and fun to navigate.

Yeah, the second map is supposed to be a lot greener and lush.
I'm going to spend so much time doing all the side missions that I may never get there.

Also PS4. I haven't noticed any issues at all and (to my non-expert eye) I think it looks great.

I'm playing on PC, it just doesn't have multiplayer. If it makes him feel better we could skype while we play.

I did like the plot, until I got to Rhun and it kinda jumped the shark.

To the people who have played this. What out of 10 would you give this game?
