A huge leak shows Microsoft is gearing up to release a range of new products next year.
Internal documents accidentally released in court filings reveal that a redesigned version of the Xbox Series X is set to be released in October 2024.
The new console will be cylindrical in shape – not cuboid like the current Series X – and is described as 'all-digital', meaning it will have no disc drive.
It will be followed by the release of a new immersive controller and a revamped version of the Series S with double the storage capacity, according to the leak.
If all goes to schedule, it would mark the first major Xbox product release since the original Series X and Series S hit the shops in November 2020.

I wish modern companies would stop trying to kill physical media. Not having a disk drive is so stupid.

This. There are certain games like Doom and anything Fromsoft where I want that physical media.

I can't even remember the last disc of anything that I bought and that goes back a few consoles i'd wager

its not for everyone but personally I love having disk because the cases look nice on my shelf and i can keep count of them. if i delete a game i can also remember i do have it because its on my shelf. It also takes up alot less space and also helps game preservation. There are many reasons to have disk.

The moment I could buy digital on any platform, I never bought another disk on that platform.

Agreed. I won't buy a system without a disc drive.

I checked Twitter right after posting in this thread and noticed that Phil Spencer just addressed the leaks (which also included discussions from 2020 about potentially buying Nintendo or Valve).

We've seen the conversation around old emails and documents. It is hard to see our team's work shared in this way because so much has changed and there's so much to be excited about right now, and in the future. We will share the real plans when we are ready.

There's so many reasons digital only should be panned by everyone. People just turn a blind eye because of "muh convenience."
Not having to produce physical disks makes the games cheaper to produce? This means less Microtransactions and cheaper games right? Nope
Licensing fees for cars, music, etc about to run out? Game is removed from digital storefronts, preventing players from ever purchasing it again. There are also examples of content that people have already purchased being removed from their digital libraries.
The end stage is to treat everything like a service where you have to pay a monthly fee to access content. Disney already does this with the vast majority of their Disney+ shows.

This is why I am getting into older games. I'm a younger guy I grew up with ps3 and played some ps2. So I've been emulating or just getting older games (gamecube, ps2,ps1,ect. like that era) because they do not have to deal with those problems are alot of the games (mainly ps1-ps2) are pretty cheap.

If the full game was on every disc and if every game didnt need a day one patch to function properly I be more apt to continue to collect physical games. Unfortunately that isnt the case and negates some but not all of the preservation argument especially if we are talking long term preservation.

welcome to the 2000s...Digital is the future

There are some caveats to going digital but sadly the ship has sailed. It will be increasingly more difficult to archive and preserve hard copies.
I also worry about increasingly narrow definitions of acceptable online behavior and the implications of losing access to digital libraries because of it.
Can’t wait for my son to get old enough to become an edge lord and brick my accounts.
