I've seen the Trading update announced, not a battle system yet. If they add in a battle system then this game will exceed every expectation and more.

Yeah, I'm not going out wandering around town a making a special trip to go to a stop. I know it's supposed to get you out but I'm not going to a grave yard at night or drive to a river or lake to find a pokemon.

It really needs a battle system.

That has to be coming IMO.

You nailed it though, battle system plus the outside collecting aspect would take this thing to even more heights.

You can bet your arse they will come out with a game on the nx that allows you to bring your mobile captured Pokemon into play. Much like a Pokemon stadium concept or platform Pokemon adventure.

Actual real time combat isn't a possibility, but setting a defense and an offensive team for 'your base' would be possible.

Say some pokemon have defensive skills (buff all pokemon when defending, build walls, lay traps, dig in and fortify)...

Some have offensive skills (phase thru wall, dig under defenses, water assault, Aerials assault, charge through a wall)

Have each player build a team of both and then have base battles in the game for coins and lures etc


Would be cool.

If that's too complicated then just a 3v3 or 5v5 with the existing cp, hp, and moveset variables would be fine.


The existing gym combat system is terrible. Defending pokemon only attack half as fast as offensive pokemon. And they can't dodge.

As someone who's never touched anything Pokeman related, ever, yet always been a Nintendo fan: Pokemon is unique within Nintendo and the gaming world at large. There is literally no way to duplicate this success. It's a property that is tailor made for something like this.

Mobile games like this last 12-18 months tops. Candy Crush was a hit, for a short time. Crusaders. Does anyone talk about Angry Bird releases? It would almost have to be redesigned constantly to last 3 years.

I hope Nintendo sticks to its past, not goes all in on anything. Pokemon Go could be a great project to lead a particular type of interaction, maybe it feeds into some kind of console Pokemon experience or something, but no, they should not become a location-based mobile gaming company. This sounds dumb.

Yeah, those two could work, but save for Warioware and maybe Mario Party, I don't see how any of their other franchises would work. You couldn't make a Mario game as good on the iPhone as you could on the 3DS. Zelda and Metroid would be impossible. Pokemon is a logical one and is everyone's fantasy of Pokemon coming to the real world. No one has such fantasies for any of Nintendo's other properties (save maybe F-Zero).

I find it amazing that people think mobile gaming is somehow a replacement for home consoles. I see this spewed all the time, it must come from National writers who have no clue about video games.

Pokemon go is interesting and I'm having fun with it, but if they don't significantly change how pokemon capturing works people will get burned out quickly.

You're a good poster and I agree with the overall point of your post, but the above just isn't true. Candy Crush is top 5 grossing right now on Android. King prints money from that game and the sequels it inspired. Clash of Clans still rakes in money years after it's release, etc. The top mobile games have proven to have greater sustainability than 12-18 months. Trust me, I look at this stuff on a daily basis

Well the only redeeming quality about the game is that you have to leave your home to play. It's the interaction with the world and getting rewarded for it that's the draw.

The game itself is shallow as frick. It's not a pokemon game. It's an AR game with pokemon as the backdrop.

You level pokemon up by catching MORE pokemon of the same type... wtf? The candy system makes absolutely no sense in the context of pokemon, and you don't battle pokemon before you catch them.

It's like the developers had to come up with a way to addict people and get them playing for a long time and the first thing they wrote on the chalk board is what they went with.

So really the author of the article is saying nintendo should abandon their principles completely and go where the money is, which is the most gullible group of gamers in the history of the industry.

Don't get me wrong, I love nintendo and I'm happy they're able to have a mobile cash cow because I feel like they're a very genuine company with principals in an industry devoid of them and it helps them stay afloat, but the day they go mobile only is the day I say "well nice to have known ya".

So you'd have to capture 101 magikarp for 1 gyrados. And then it may evolve with garbage skills and be XS so it's trash. Better regrind 101 more magikarp kids!

Oh and probably the worst thing: I've heard so many new people say "oh man this is amaxing! I see what all the pokemon fuss is about!" Like this game is somehow an accurate representation of the franchise.

These damn kids don't know shite about trying to level all 3 birds plus Mewtwo to lvl 99 for recess pokemon wars at school in the 90s

Fwiw I think pokemon go is a great concept and will be following it.

In the original video, this as well as mass battles with Legendary Pokemon were promised. We are for all intents and purposes in the Beta version of this game. There's so much more shite they can add to this game that it's nuts.

Imagine if they put Team Rocket in to challenge you randomly to battles. Imagine if every city had an Elite 4 you could build yourself up to. They could rent out huge bars for whenever they put Mewtwo into play. Then of course they can release Gen II Pokemon and beyond. It is really the most limitless mobile game of all time.

Yeah, because you need buttons and a D-Pad for it to work. It's bitterly disappointing without it. Don't believe me, play Sonic on an iPhone. Only Mario properties I think could work on the iPhone are Mario Party, Dr Mario, and Warioware. No way can we have platforming Mario on a touch screen without sodomizing the product.
