I have that too.
I didn't know I needed a receiver after I bought the controller.

I might get an XB1 controller when the PC wireless adapter is released, this fall supposedly.

which is about 1/4 the price of the over priced MSFT option.

I got one 3 years ago and it still works fine.

I thought the whole point of PC gaming was to ditch the controllers and go with the "much more precise and powerful" keyboard and mouse

I've always preferred a controller though

I use both but there have been some games that sucked on keyboard and worked great with a gamepad.

been using mine for shooter/racing/sports games for about 4 years now and could honestly never go back to a keyboard.

I've been a M/KB player for 20+ years, but there are certain things that are still better on controller. Driving games (or games that having a driving element, like GTA) benefit from analog input for steering. Keyboards are digital input devices, so using directional keys means steering sensitivity is fixed, and driving can be a pain in the arse when you have to follow/chase/evade someone. Fighting games like Mortal Kombat are easier to execute combos on controller.

Probably due to my lack of experience with a controller, but most everything else is easier for me on M/KB, including third-person action/RPG games like Witcher, Batman, Assassin's Creed, etc. Anytime I have to aim and shoot something, I am useless on anything but M/KB. Games like GTA, I only pick up the controller when I have to drive.

I've grown up on controllers. Had the SNES when I was 6 and had consoles since then. I feel like they're much more user-friendly and comfortable. They also don't require you to sit at a desk or juggle a bulky keyboard and mouse set on a couch. The only thing I've thought could benefit on PC is shooters because of how good the mouse is for turning the camera quickly and accurately. And possibly RPGs since more buttons = less menus. But I can't imagine playing madden or mortal kombat or Mario or any other games on PC

FWIW, graphics quality is low on my list of desires in a game, so I could see how some people building super comps for high quality visual gaming may be motivated by superior graphics potential

Not really. I like having the option.

Shooters are probably the one thing that's objectively better with M/KB since M/KB has a much higher skill ceiling than controller. As for RPGs, I did try Witcher 3 on a controller for a while, but after playing so much of it on M/KB, I was annoyed with the extra steps to access menus and change signs on the controller.

Well remember, with PC the interface is your choice. Xbox 360 or XB1 controller, PS4 or PS3 controller (not necessarily as functional in every single game because it's not supported natively), M/KB, or one of the many third-party game pads made for PC. There are also USB arcade sticks for the hardcore players of fighting games. And you don't even have to pick just one in any given game.

I use my gamepad for action games like prototype and Alan Wake, Sports games, and older space sims.

Shooters and rpg's are m/kb
