Im thinking of getting a cheaper package while getting rid of cable and phone.

If I get the basic package where Im guaranteed 5-15 MBPS, will I have to deal with every day lag? Im willing to spend $20 more a month for higher internet speed, but Im trying to be thrifty nowadays. Ive been reading everywhere online that 5-15 MBPS is enough for what I'm trying to do as far as online gaming and getting my apps to work without lag. Just want some opinions if I can in fact be thrifty with this purchase.

TIA

Ping is whats most important. Millisecond response between you and game server.

With that said, 5-15mbps could be fine.

If you use the same connection, but just downgrade the DL speed, you should be fine.

im not literally a grandpa, but im a technology grandpa. With that said, if you could mildly elaborate if you are willing, that would be greatly appreciated.

I try to google this stuff and I spend 30 minutes with people spewing nonsense.

Basically, If I get the 5-15mbps, how do I control the DL? (which btw Idk wtf DL stands for )

Edit: I also mildly understand ping. If I get a better mbps, does that guarantee that my ping is better?

I seriously appreciate everyones help. I will vogue for you all getting public service hours to assist your taxes if you help me. Technology is my kryptonite.

Ill keep it simple.

I think that connection speed will be fine for online gaming.

fair enough

Im stuck in deciding if I want to spend $30 more a month for up to 50mbps if I dont have to. (Im in a 1br apartment by myself so I wont be sharing internet speed)

Do you download a lot of games from the xbox marketplace? Thats where you will notice the slower speed.

Sometimes. But I dont mind waiting on slow uploads. Im more worried about watching live TV from my apps and being able to play online without me feeling like I need to throw my controller into the TV because im lagging so hard.

No, mbps download speed really doesnt affect ping.

Online gaming isnt data intensive like streaming netflix.

Which btw if you stream netflix you will notice the slower speeds.

well this might be enough info for me to want to pay more. Since I wont be paying for cable, I might want to get higher MBPS for me to stream TV comfortably.

Pretty much the reason I wont be adding cable to the package since I can stream a lot of what I want through the Xbox.

Thanks for your advice

5 is definitely not enough. 15 maybe. If you use wifi for anything you'll experience some speed loss and probably not be able to function. If you're already dropping cable and phone, and you're only going to be using internet for everything, I'd suggest you get something around 30 at least

Do you plan on having streaming services, like Netflix and Hulu?

Are you single, or will family be also be using it?

Do you typically have just one device using the internet at once, or multiple?

If you are going to downgrade the speed, you must Hardwire the console to Modem.

I get from around 12-20 at all times. I use a wireless connection from across the house upstairs. I can play with no lag(as long as no one else is streaming Netflix), watch Netflix with no lag, and use watch espn with no lag. Hope that helps

And like others have said, downloading games will take a couple hours minimum. Also large game updates could take over an hour as well. However I believe you can turn updates on to automatic so it will do it when you aren't even playing.

just to make you more unsure my experience is opposite of what others have said.

I have about 10 at best with ATT.
I have no problem streaming anything.
Downloading games can take hours and hours and hours. I used to play multiplayer all the time but I lag so much its impossible now.

Id say go for more it you want to play multiplayer

What? No. That's not how that works. Even old arse 802.11g is more than capable of handling 5-15Mbps. The wifi bandwidth is much higher than his internet bandwidth.

However, wifi tends to have higher latency for several reasons. That is why it is generally regarded as inferior for gaming.

OP, 5-15 is fine for gaming. 15 is even fine for streaming 1080p Netflix (not 4k).

Think of bandwidth(Mbps) vs latency(ping) like this:
-Bandwidth = how wide of a highway you have (2 lane vs 5 lane)
-Latency = how long it takes for you to get to your destination and back.

So you may only need a 2-lane highway to get to where you are going if traffic is light (not using a lot of bandwidth).. but if there is construction or traffic congestion on the road causing you to go slower, then your travel time (latency) increases. In this way, latency and bandwidth can have some relation, but increasing your bandwidth doesn't necessarily decrease your latency.

In gaming, latency is king. Gaming is not bandwidth intensive, but you need a stable connection with low latency.

Hope that helps..

5 is plenty. I have 3.0 mbps and play just fine. Hell i ran 1.5 mbps and had no issues. As long as it is hardwired in, and no other devices online.

Yeah games mostly send and receive player location and projectile location and hitboxes back and forth to a server, iirc. Most games will run about 1Mbps of data with that, and the rest is stored locally.

The exception to that is if the game does p2p hosting, in which players become game hosts. Client-server provides a much more stable multiplayer experience, so most games have phased this out. I'm not sure if CoD still does p2p but Halo was the worst of them.
