Metroid Prime is the only one I ever put a lot of time into. I tried Echos when it came out and it didn't grab me. Wish I had played more of it.
But the first one is definitely top 5 all time for me.

echoes is supremely weird which I like, but it's also supremely challenging without the hint system and as you get into the 2nd half of the game it is very difficult in terms of defeating enemies and bosses. it also felt a lot longer. I put like 40 hours into it.

Prime series is one of the best series ever.
Its not really debatable either.

i should say "individually"
that goes without saying. I didn't start playing Metroid until last year and so i'm not blinded by nostalgia when I say Metroid prime is one of the 3 best games I've ever played, and it has aged better than the #1 and #2 on my list. I never once while playing it thought "man, this game is old"
I also played super Metroid first and even though I have been playing 3d games for 20 years, that 2d to 3d transition felt just like I was playing Mario 64 or OoT for the first time

Prime was amazing because at the time it came out there wasn't a lot out there like it.
The game just did everything right. Music, enemies, controls (unreal controls), even had a great HUD screen.
I haven't played the game in over 10 years but I know if I did it would be just as good now.

This is just a personal preference on my part, but when you compare what Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time did for those franchise as far as opening up a new world of gameplay, Prime had more of an impact on me as far as 'holy shite I can't believe they pulled this off". Super Metroid was a game I played over and over and still love to this day. A first person Metroid was just unheard of and even without dual-analog, it was pretty much perfect.

Prime 3 falls behind the first two for sure. Corruption is good, but the first two almost set a standard that is unattainable.
The firs 2 are absolute greatness.

interesting. most of what I read online has corruption as either the 2nd best and for some, the best of the prime series and echoses, which is every bit as good IMO and risk taking in terms of design, seemed to be the unanimous #3 and whipping boy of the series
I think because the dark world is a little to tense or scary which makes you hesitant to explore like you would in the original with no fricks given. BTW, metroids in 3d scare the piss out of me. playing super Metroid first, when I encountered them, I thought "oh metroids, cool" and just shot them like any other enemy. when a Metroid is flying towards your face in the prime series, it is terrifying for me

This. 3 is a great game when you look at it in a vacuum. It just has the unfortunate circumstance of having to follow up Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2 which belong in the category of best games ever made.
When compared to all games as a whole, it is easily an A+ game. It just doesn't look nearly as good when put in the bright light of it's predecessors.

Prime was one of the few games that gave me a genuine "HOLY shite" moment when it got rolling.
When it got cranked up, just having Metroid in FPS mode was sick.

That being said, seeing a 3D Hyrule Field was pretty special.

Metroid Prime 1 is pretty much my favorite game of all time, so I definitely rank it the highest. I would also put Prime 2 and 3 below it and in order of release.
I enjoyed Prime 2 but I did wish there was more variety in the environments. The (dual) nature of the planet you're on prevents it from being too different, and I get that, but by the end it just became a little exhausting to look at. I liked the difficulty, though.
I think Prime 3's attempt to fix that was to have you go to different planets and I actually loved that aspect of it. It creates a more plausible reason for the drastic climate and environmental changes in the relatively small space of the planet Samus tends to explore. I also enjoyed exploring the derelict ship floating abandoned in space as another unique environment separate from the other planets.
On top of that, I've always loved the little moments in other Metroid games where you circle back to your ship and hop in for a quick recharge, so her ship playing a bigger part of Prime 3 was nice too. Prime 3 is WAY too easy, though and its more linear structure keeps it from feeling like you're blazing your own path.
That's a complaint I have of Metroid Fusion too. Part of the fun of Metroid is getting a little bit lost.

2d to 3d transition is kind of remarkable. for the games that were established series on 2d consoles to still be going 20 years after 3d consoles became the standard is an accomplishment.
for example, megaman isn't a 3d series. it tried to make the transition and failed.

really interesting and valid summary. I think the ship playing a bigger role sounds a lot better than it plays though. It didn't add anything for me. I think the only thing it did was what you said, made geographical diversity more plausible, but that's a really small gain and they designed the whole game around that.
i also liked that the story is the same but also very different and that while samus has a personal stake in the story, it's about unfricking the planet whereas in corruption everything is so centered around samus in a way that's less enjoyable. also, a leviathan was this awesome thing that you would wait the whole game to conquer, so when they put a whole bunch of them in corruption it kind of makes it less cool

without a doubt.
The Switch needs to deliver to Metroid Fans what they have been craving, another badass FPS style game.
Other M was meh to me.
They should make a main Prime 4 for Switch.

Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (every bit as good as the original)
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Gaps are not that big.
Prime has the gold star for getting released first, but I like the weird take of 2, and the structure of 3.
Prime is a GOAT game, legitimately, but the other 2 are basically just as good.
