Guys, we need to talk about Nintendo's voice chat app

Polygon - multi-taskers worst nightmare

quote:

Voice chat is only active as long as the app is open. The smartphone in use also has to be unlocked and its screen on in order for voice chat to work. If you accidentally shut your phone’s screen off? Your conversation is over. Want to glance at a walkthrough really quickly? If you do, that means no more voice chat.

quote:

All of this is compounded by the fact that players won’t be able to get any game audio from their headsets if they’re plugged into their phones. Hori has come up with a garish workaround for this — you plug a dongle into your phone and your Switch to get both audio at once — but that setup isn’t convincing Switch owners to hop onto the Online app train.

Kotaku

From Nintendo's FAQ:

quote:

If I use my smart device’s other features (texts, social media, etc.) will I be disconnected?

The voice chat will disconnect while you’re talking on the phone or using another application, but your voice chat will restart in the same room once you open the Nintendo Switch Online application again as long as the game session is still ongoing.

So.......................man, it's sometimes just too easy.

I said in the other thread that I really want to cheer for Nintendo. But I just don't get this ideal that Nintendo needs to control their online experience for their players, like they're protecting them from the mean old internet.

There's a lot of speculation that Nintendo really doesn't want to offer a VC option, wanting to maintain the family friendly experience of their consoles, but why don't you leave that in the hands of your consumers. Maybe realize that we are smart enough to protect ourselves.

I mean, it's either they are doing that or just have no ever loving clue how to make chat work. Pick one.

They have a license to print money. You mean to tell me that at no point t has it occurred to ANYONE at Nintendo to hire away some of the UX people from Xbox or Playstation to take a worthwhile online presence and bring it to the Nintendo IPs/consoles. Their online strategy is legitimately the most retarded thing in consumer electronics.

It's absolutely mind blowing.

Off topic, but why are you the one constantly bashing Nintendo?

BTW, this isn't Nintendo's voice chat solution. That's a 3rd party mic and audio set up.

The same company, Hori, also has these horrible PS4 controllers:

They are notorious for making oddball peripherals

It's their app.

And it's not the design of the peripheral that's the issue. That's pretty much what you have to do to get VC to work.

Well this is obviously the greatest set up ever. We're just too adult to recognize it.

The Nintendo Calvary will be here soon to help us understand the sheer genius of this clusterfrick.

It's a stupid, stupid decision and setup.

But it isn't surprising from a Japanese company pretty much focused on the Japanese market first.

I hear that the Japanese market are not VC-centric like the American market, so maybe there's a difference?

It still sucks, but again, what else are people to do? Feedback is the only thing that works. I'd rather play Splatoon without VC over the dozens of perfectly acceptable VC-enabled Multiplayer FPS's on other consoles. Plus, Nintendo are classically stubborn, you kind of just have to go with it if you want to play Nintendo games.

There's no rationalization. It's a stupid decision, terrible business decision, but there is nothing a consumer can do besides "not buy the product," which kind of technically already happened with the Wii U and didn't work. I can't choose "the other console with Nintendo games," and shun Nintendo. So I can either deprive myself of Splatoon....or just deal with it. Hence...

Outside of feedback, there is nothing else to do. I already gave the app 1-star...not much else I can do.

I already tried to devote more time to the Xbox and found that 90% of those games are trash. So many disappointments. Sadly, regardless of the VC choice, Splatoon will most likely be more fun than any game in the past 2 years on the Xbox for me. So my choice is really to give up console gaming or just deal some of these terrible decisions.

It's weird because I actually think they saw Discord and Skype and said , "Disconnected VC apps are the way to go, way more flexible, THAT'S the FUTURE!" and proceeded to try and build that and then failed horribly.

Good intentions, as usual, with Nintendo but bad execution on these "extra" features.

That or it legitimately can't handle the VC on the console due to resource load.

I'm one of the biggest Nintendo fanboys on this board and even I think this setup is absolutely, diabolically retarded. But by no means is it or should it be a knock on the switch. The department that designed it and the people who greenlit the operation are the problems. I feel like Nintendo is a 2 sided company. The problem with Nintendo is that all their greatest developers outside Sakurai and Aonuma just can't stand the thought of a "kid" having a bad life experience because of the influence of one of their games or products.

It really is a shame too. It almost reminds me of the abortion and religion debate that's common over here in the states. Their child-friendly schtick held them back for years from about 2011 to just 3 months ago. Sad really. But the Switch is great. And so are each of the games outside bomberman and that 1,2 Switch shite.

Who cares? It's Nintendo. Play Zelda and Mario by yourself or with other people in the same room. Same goes for Mario Kart.

In 30 years as a Nintendo fan boy, I've never been playing a Nintendo game and thought goddammit I really wish I was online and chatting with people right now.

Seems like plenty of people. If you have paid any attention at all to the backlash

Splatoon 2 comes out tomorrow and it is 2017, people should be able to have this.

Sure wish I could use this excuse for some of the things my company does to customers.

I really love how you fanboys justify this garbage. Nintendo has two of the more popular MP games out there, and it's crazy they still can't come up with a decent chat solution.

A couple of things:

1) I think typically those who prefer Nintendo games over other styles of games will ask the same question I posted "Can I deal with peripheral issues if I get to play Splatoon 2?" And that answer is usually yes. There's no other game like splatoon.

2) what should be people do. A lot of people complain about Nintendo or fanboys, but what can fanboys and those who seemingly just complain do? Nintendo is typically a stubborn company, so what are the options?

1) This is joke?

2) It isn't about being stubborn. They just half arse a lot of features which give a terrible experience for their fans and supporters.
