I'll die on the hill that the N64 controller wouldn't be that bad if the joysticks lasted longer than one game of Mario Party. The "confusion" over where to grip whether you were playing with D-pad or joystick was so overplayed.

The N64 controller was also awful compared to the dual shock

I prefer the model that came out after, the type S I think it was called.

The Type S was so far ahead of other controllers on the market.

There was no need to ever hold on to the entire left side of the controller. I struggle to remember when I actually had to use the D-pad. It was a dumb design. And I played the crap out of the 64. We did what we could but that was a garbage controller.

I used the Duke but when I found the S I never looked back. And that's essentially been the same xbox contoller design since.

The issue was that the controller was designed at a time when we didn’t know the direction control schemes would go. It’s basically a 2 in 1 controller. Depending on the game, you would either grip center and right (what became standard) or left and right (old school dpad with buttons). It was never intended to use left, center, and right in the same game.

Keeping that context in mind, it was a great controller design for the time.

I loved that controller, I bought an extra one when they started to get scarce because everyone was switching to the S. I tried the S but my Halo skills went way down when using it and I didn't want to spend the time trying to transition.

N64 controller sucked arse at the time and has only worsened with age.

Single analog stick design? Yeah, that’s great for 3D environments.

The alternative at the time was 4 directional buttons and no joysticks at all. Give me the joystick and Z-targeting any day.

The 64 had been out for almost a year before the first playstation dual analog controller was even made.

I remember some games that only supported the d-pad in menus.
