Saw in some tweets yesterday that Nintendo confirmed that they will only be charging $20 a year. Also today they announced a change to their free game plan:

Kotaku

quote:

Nintendo Switch’s online service will cost $20/year and will launch at some point in 2018, the publisher said today. Playing Switch games online will be free until the service launches.

You can also get a one-month subscription for $4 and a three-month subscription for $8.

As Nintendo previously said, voice chat and online lobby features won’t be available on the Switch itself. Instead, you’ll have to use them through a smartphone app that Nintendo says will be launch this summer. “Our new dedicated smart device app will connect to Nintendo Switch and let you invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends during online matches in compatible games-all from your smart device,” the company says. “A free, limited version of this app will be available for download in summer 2017.”

Nintendo adds that subscribers will get free versions of classic games with added online features, citing Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight and Dr. Mario as examples. Previously, Nintendo had said that subscribers will get access to a different game each month, but that plan appears to have changed:

Instead of certain games only being available for one month. Glad they are listening to *somebody*.

It's probably too late for them to do something about the smart phone app voice chat feature, because everything I've read about that sounds like garbage.

It's not as bad as you may think. A lot of gamers prefer using an app called discord, where you can have huge chat rooms at a time.

PC gamers love it, sure. Most console gamers are happy with the in game chat function that works through their system.

LINK

quote:

Accessories manufacturer Hori will release a Nintendo Switch headset alongside Splatoon 2 this summer, one of the first of its kind for the console. But illustrated instructions for how the headset will connect to the Switch don’t give owners a ton of confidence about the future of voice chat.

First, the pro: The headset looks like it came straight out of Splatoon, with some pop art detailing on each ear. That’s the point, according to Hori’s Twitter, which includes an image of an Inkling Boy wearing the headset as proof.

And now, for the cons. A diagram included in Hori’s tweet about the headset shows how it will work with the Switch’s as-yet-unseen voice chat capabilities. It’s ... a mess, if we’re being generous.

quote:

The headset plugs into an almost squid-shaped splitter, which routes cables in two directions: one into the Switch’s headphone jack, the other into a cell phone. Nintendo’s proposed voice chat system for the Switch is all localized on an app, not on the console itself. In other words: For Splatoon 2 trash talking, you’ll have to have your cell phone handy.

Hori’s attempt to make this situation work is respectable. It’s also proof of how backwards Nintendo’s method for voice chat on the Switch seems to be. The app, which is also meant to give players access to other basic social features, like online lobbies, has no release date, nor has Nintendo discussed it since before the console’s launch. This headset is our first sign in a long while of what could be many painful years of fighting with dongles and short cables to make voice chat work on the system.

This solution is less bizarre than the Wii’s, at least; that console similarly lacked native voice chat functionality, instead requiring players to purchase a separate microphone accessory, Wii Speak. The Wii U also lacked universal voice chat support; only wired headsets worked with the system, and only when plugged into the Wii U GamePad.

All of this is really only a problem if you want to have game audio and voice chat sound in your ears at the same time. For those who don’t, the option to just plug earphones into a cell phone to access the online app is still there, no dual-cabled headset needed. But if you’d like to hear that bumping Splatoon 2 soundtrack while chatting up your teammates, headsets like Hori’s seem to be the way to go, for better or worse. Much worse.

Gardoki keeps telling me I just don't get Nintendo.

And he's 100% correct.

Won't be around until 2018.

It's fricking stunning to me that we're 3 months into the Switch and it has exactly 1 game worth playing, with nothing else on the horizon AT ALL except for one game this Holiday season. The least they could do is have tons of EASY TO PORT old games available for us right now.

Does Nintendo have any clue what they're doing..? Jesus

Nintendo is slow and methodical, and it just doesn't work in today's gaming landscape. They have been behind the 8 ball since the wii, but their broken mentality was reinforced by the wii, unfortunately, selling very well.

I think this announcement makes the VC at E3 announcement way more concrete.

And I think we're going to get some Cube games.

The online service seems better than expected. Price is right as long as they tighten up the network before release.

The only real negative is a lack of trophy/achievements and the hilariously bad voice chat options.

I hope this is what the delay is about.....and that the Splatoon set is just the original plan that they scrap.

Halo 2 came out in 2004. 13 years ago. I had a headset I plugged into my bulky arse xbox controller and was able to chat with teammates and shite talk the other team through the infant xbox live.

This isn't about Nintendo not being able to figure out a more than 13 year old feature. This is stubborn individuality because "we're Nintendo". Most of us scoff, and the fans who still love what they do are suffering and will slowly become alienated.

I've said this many times, they have the IP's that are always going to make them unique. Just make your platform function on a basic level and you will own the market.

ok

but seriously, they need trophies / achievements, my OCD brain loves them

They are destroying it in the East, but they really need to kick it out of the park during e3 this year for the West - I don't know how much it would affect their sales currently, but in the long run they need a few good western style games to keep up the current pace they are on.

It's because voice chat is just whiny children and Child-Adults screaming obscenities into microphones.

Voice chat is only really useful, for some people, in highly controlled environments...which is why some people are ok with highly controlled voice chat.

Honestly, public or open voice chat adds nothing to a game but annoyance from what I've seen. And I've used voice chat since Teamspeak+EQ days. And More lately than not on the X1 I leave it off because of the sheer stupidity in multiplayer games. It often just ruins the experience. I've probably used X1 voice chat in Overwatch like 3 times total because it just sucks.

To each, his own, though. You may like the cesspool and the voice chat decision is absolutely critical to your enjoyment, therefore this looks dumb (and for you it is a dumb decision). On the other hand, it doesn't affect my enjoyment/satisfaction one bit. And that's ok. And honestly, I'm ok with Nintendo trying to make voice chat less crappy. Whatever that means, and even if it is eventually unsuccessful. Because...

1) Again, why is it so important that Nintendo acts like everyone else? Choice, differentiation, these are good things?

2) Why do you have such a problem with people who prefer one approach over another?

I'd also wonder if this to scrape every ounce of power out of the system because it is underpowered.

It is still outpacing the Wii in sales by an incredible margin in the East and 10% in the West. That is not "could" or "ifs": it is facts

ETA: This is a stupid, stupid argument you have popped into this thread to make, stop, and get back on topic instead of making baseless claims

Then don't offer it at all if that's how they feel. The casual "friendly" gamers aren't going to go through this effort to be able to chat.

I didn't make any argument.

I said I didn't like the idea. You posted the article with the information I was responding to.

Calm. Down.
