How's the story?

Story is great. Its takes the seemingly standard RPG route of a simple, routine mission to start that gradually turns into something a lot more catastrophic that you must deal with. But it is done very nicely.

quote:

looks like it requires a lot of patience

Crafting & inventory management is a pain at first. Eventually you'll develop your own system to help organize as you move along and both becomes easier. It isn't that crafting is hard to do, its just that you receive so much crafting materials throughout the game that it can seem overwhelming to jump into.

And combat is great. You can manipulate the terrain/environment to help you in fights (the CPU will do it to you too), so it makes battles seem unique instead of doing the same things over & over for 100 hours. For instance, it's raining and your enemy is standing in a water puddle. Said enemy is also immune to elemental damage, so your mage spells are pretty worthless against him. When its your mage's turn to act, instead of attacking the enemy directly with spells he is immune to, use a freezing spell on the water puddle that the enemy is standing on which will turn the puddle to ice, thus causing him to slip & fall. While he is knocked down, his turn is skipped multiple times until he stands back up but also his physical defense takes a huge hit while he is laying on his arse. So send in your tank/melee character to wipe him out while he is on the ground & cant defend himself. But then again you'll have to be careful because friendly fire is possible: your melee character can slip on that very same ice you just created if they aren't wearing the proper anti slipping equipment. Obviously not every fight requires that much thought or planning, but sometimes you'll be against a particular tough foe or just outnumbered in general and are about to be swarmed. In those situations, you can often change the momentum back to you by figuring out a way to alter the terrain of the battlefield to your favor.

It requires patience at first while you figure things out through trial & error. But by the end of the tutorial section (the murder mystery you're solving to start the game), you'll have the combat controls and inventory figured out. And that's when the story really takes off...

I wish there was a modern Star Wars RPG.

Yes!! This or even Star Trek.

RPG games are my favorite, but I don't get into running around with a sword, so my options are limited.

Reading this thread throws me back in the old days - I love RPGs. Dragon age origins is probably my modern fav. Beat it dozens of times but solo nightmare was a my fav mode.

Old school games: FF1/FF3/FF7 (others are great, esp jap ones), Baldurs gate 1/2, dragon quest, Neverwinter nights, ultima online, Diablo 1-3, chronotrigger, geez I could go one for hours... SO many hours wasted.

Modern games: DA:O, DA:I, witcher series, elder scrolls/ skyrim, etc.... list can go on, pretty sure it's all been covered previously. But IMO nothing beats the fun from the originals. I am probably biased but the originals were ground breaking in their own time.

Sounds great. I'll probably check it out after final fantasy. Downloaded Pier Solar for xbone. Old 16 bit rpg originally for sega with hd graphics. It's great. Great soundtrack and really brings you back to the classics

I just completed Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky First Chapter. It's a PSP game that released a while back, but put it off until now (they also ported it to PC as well). It has a very slow start (about 4-5 hour prologue with a ton of character development and backstory), but once it gets going, it really hooks you. I didn't want to keep going, but I ended up doing all sidequests, and started the sequel immediately after.

For any fans of more classic JRPGs or someone wanting a turn based RPG with good story and characters, I highly recommend it. Drops to $10 very often on Steam/PSN sales.

Xcom 2 comes to consoles in September too. Havent played it on PC, so really looking forward to this as well.

XCOM (and I've been playing since the old, original XCOM ) - isn't really a RPG (in the classic sense), but I know what you mean. Those of us who enjoy the turn-based games - the classics of course were Fallout and Fallout 2, before they morphed into Elder Scrolls: Fallout (NTTAWWT). There are some great games with some of those elements (Jagged Alliance, particularly JA2 had enough elements to make it in the ballpark).

I was going to play Wasteland 2 (I played the original Wasteland, back in the day), but I've held off. I'm waiting for it to go on sale again. I'm excited about XCOM 2 as well.
