Nintendo responds to Metroid Prime backlash

quote:

Speaking to Mashable, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime acknowledged that fans were disappointed not to see a traditional Metroid Prime game make an appearance - especially given how high fan demand has been - but that the company was adamant it had to avoid older franchises becoming stale.

quote:

"This is an example where fans who aren't able to get their hands on the game may be at a bit of a competitive disadvantage. Everyone who has played what we are showing regarding Metroid Prime, they've come across really pleased. My ask is that fans trust us.

"We believe that in order to propel the franchises forward, we have to be the ones to constantly challenge the paradigms, challenge the conventional wisdom, challenge what we thought was the essence of the particular franchise, and a particular form of gameplay."

Umm, that's find and dandy, Reg, but you essentially ripped the Prime tag from your Samus plush doll and slapped it on a co-op 3DS game that barely resembles Metroid at all.

quote:

Nintendo announced a new Metroid game for Nintendo 3DS during its E3 Digital Event last month called Metroid Prime: Federation Force. However, its lack of Samus and the exploration-heavy gameplay the series is known for left a number of Nintendo fans disappointed.

How naive do you have to be to think teasing a new Prime game and then trotting this nonsense out is a great idea? Oh, nevermind, anything goes in Nintenderland.

Yeah, it's bullshite they built up another Prime game before E3 just to give us this crap. I don't care if this game is good, it's nothing more than a spin-off. Give us another real prime game for the Wii-U. There's other things that can be done with this. Nintendo is severely lacking in FPS', and all three Prine games have the single best campaign of any FPS on the market.

What he meant to say is that the wii u is a disaster that they won't waste a new metroid on, so they created a metroid game for their successful platform.

He's just a really big PR guy for Nintendo's American market.

It's classic corporate gobbledygook.

quote:

"We believe that in order to propel the franchises forward, we have to be the ones to constantly challenge the paradigms, challenge the conventional wisdom, challenge what we thought was the essence of the particular franchise, and a particular form of gameplay."

Translation: We know fans want a true Metroid Prime sequel, but they're not getting it because we can't market the Wii U. We're better off waiting for the release of our next system.

Some of the GBA/DS Metroids were liked. No reason they couldn't have made a 3DS title that actually looks like a Metroid title.

I think I had already changed my mind on getting a Wii U before that announcement, but it definitely sealed it.

The two games I was really interested in was a new Metoid and one they have actually shown, Zelda, but we haven't seen crap about that since LAST E3.

I was talking to a friend of mine who is a manager of the local Gamestop, and we were discussing how the new 3DS's didn't include a charge cable, and how their rationale was "the people buying these already have one". So, not only do they not care about their current supporters, they're not really interested in bringing in new people.

It's as if they just like being Nintendo, and that's it.

Nintendo makes one bizarre decision after another. That's why I want them to just make games, stick to what you are good at.

And they have they just got killed with the Wii U. Nintendo should have stuck to a $200-$250 console and everything would have been fine, instead they went with a tablet controller that drove up cost.

I don't think Nintendo would be the same making games for other consoles.

Nintendo has believed they know what the fans want more than the fans themselves since at least the n64 days. This is why the n64 had cartridges, why Windwaker was developed, why the GameCube used those to tiny disks and did not play DVDs, and why the Wii U exists.

Sometimes they get it right and sometimes not.

This isn't happening. At this point, Nintendo is ready to abandon both the Wii U and 3DS.

All evidence at this point strongly suggests that the NX will be released in the second half of next year.

There's no reason for them to abandon the 3ds if it's still printing money and they just released the New 3DS.

We don't even know if the NX is handheld or console, no?

Yes. It's been referred to numerous times by Fils-Aime and Iwata as being a "dedicated video game platform."

quote:

The existence of the New 3DS is due to the fact that the original 3DS was not printing money. Nintendo needed something to temporarily boost sales and restore enthusiasm around the platform, and the solution was a hardware revision. The 3DS is woefully underpowered and relatively expensive to manufacture. By this time next year, the system will be over 5 years old, which is quite a long lifespan for a dedicated handheld system.

All indications at this point suggest that the NX will be both a handheld and a home console. Nintendo has expressed that they're intent on unifying game development between their portable and home platforms, which will likely be accomplished through a shared hardware architecture and OS. The portable will likely run games at a lower resolution with reduced graphical effects, while the home console will run the same games at a higher resolution and graphical fidelity. Each system may have a few exclusives (ie, Pokemon on the handheld), but the goal is to produce a steady output of software on both systems via the unification of the development teams.

Iwata has stated numerous times that they're envious of Apple's current paradigm with iOS, which indicates that they're developing a Steam like ecosystem for all future iterations of their hardware platforms.
