FIFA 17 vs. PES 2017

What's the verdict?
PES is looking better, FIFA probably needs a year with the new engine before they are comfortable.
I just really hope option file downloads are possibly on the X1, that' my only hesitation.

What type of experience are you looking for?

I used to get both every year up until 2014 and I stopped because while EA's FIFA is a cookie cutter, PES lacks majorly in licensing and game modes.
Literally all PES has above FIFA at this point is the UCL license along with the game requiring more skill.
EA's Pro Clubs, seasons, FUT make vastly a superior experience (I'm not yet convinced that FIFA' new player career mode will be great, but that is also new this year)

Ah about that time of year where people act like PES is anywhere near FIFAs level.

It's the biggest problem for sure. Second is probably online.

I just felt UT was a massive waste of time, maybe I just didn't give it enough chance. But if that and the career mode are the core, that might cause me to skip. I think I can give up licensing. Maybe.

I typically only play Pro Clubs and Manager Mode and I'll give the 'Story mode' a shot this season.
I enjoy Manager Mode even though it's pretty bare bones, but I still tend to sink 100-150 hours into it over the course of one game, until the next one comes out.
I don't like FUT, but it's by far the most popular game mode.

Maybe, but EA with a new-ish engine and a bad looking story mode?

Not knowing anything about soccer, PES plays so much better. FIFA feels too stiff and artificial.

PES was better than FIFA back in like 2007 on Xbox 360

The PES demo plays pretty good, but the lack of licenses and PS1-esque menus/UI make it pretty hard to get immersed in the manager mode (master league). No option files on XB1 makes it a no go for me, especially since they don't even have La Liga anymore.

That's pretty much it.
After playing both demos, PES is definitely better on the field. Heck, 17 still feels like 15 for the most part. So little improvement.
But as usual the presentation and licenses are well done.

PES has been better than FIFA at pure gameplay since last year, and most reviews reflect this. Konami has perfected the FOX engine.
No clue on this year, but last year PES was considered the better game. But most also thought FIFA 16 was the worst FIFA in years, no clue on 17 for it either.
ETA: Early reviews sound like more of the same in favor of PES
PES 2017 reviews LIVE: Konami scores BIG with critics ahead of release date
As for rosters, it takes about 2 minutes with a USB stick to download and apply full rosters/likeness/kits for PES. It's the exact same thing you would do for a new NCAA Football with no licensing, you let the community do it and download/file share it. PES already does this for their missing licenses.
Demo them both and pick the one with the gameplay you prefer.

Early Verdict
Once you get out on the pitch, this is the best game of football ever made. It’s the most technically savvy, intelligent and free-flowing experience I’ve ever had on a digital pitch. I just hope that the online experience – an enormous flaw last year – holds up so that this experience can be excellent across the board. While modes remain largely the same and licenses will still be a thorn in the side for some, when the football is this good, all of that fades away and you simply enjoy the beautiful game.

Not on Xbox.
No option files on the Xbox.
I played the 03-05 on the PC where I did do this and it was fantastic. I have no idea why the Xbox is limited in this regard.

Ah that stinks, is that an Xbox limitation thing? Definitely can do it on PS4.

Yup.
And apparently the PC version is not really PES 2017, sort of like a ported older version or something. Long story short, PS4 is the best version of it. Everyone else is losing a significant amount.
But the FIFA 17 Demo was so blah at the same time, hence the tough decision.

Yeah, I had PES 16 on PC and it was a port so I got it on PS4 when it was on sale. FIFA 16 on PC was solid and not a port though, have it free with EA/Origin Access.
Think I'll grab PES 17 on PS4 tomorrow.

I can't get $25 off and another $10 gift certificate later from PES at Best Buy like I can FIFA 17, that's how my decision is being made between the two close games
