Just started at Fort Joy, but it seems like the game is mainly just talking and text interactions. Am I wrong? Does it get any better?

it's mostly a turn based strategy game. There is a lot of talking. It's not for everyone but it's a damn fine game.

I tried it. Just couldn't get into it for the same reasons OP.

The story and characters get more interesting, but the gameplay doesn't change much outside of new abilities and strategies in combat.

Are you playing on PC or console?

I've always wanted to try this game, and bought it for console, but I ultimately decided to wait until I having a gaming PC so I can take advantage of the mods (like the one that increases party size).

It’s slow at first but it’s a great game. One of my all time favorites. The original was great as well.

Its a fantastic party/turn based rpg, but as several other folks have said, you have to be into that kind of game. Had some friends that bounced off of Baldurs Gate 3 recently for the same reason, you have to be into the stories and enjoy all the reading and party mgmt to really get into these games... but if you are into it - they are some of the best examples of the genre out there.

I played half way through the first one, loved the gameplay but I had no idea what was going on with the story. It was alot of dialogue with 0 cut scenes

I presume you are familiar with the magic that is Nexusmods.com, right?

Do you need to play the first one to understand the story in the second one?

Anyone else pick this up for the first time after getting hooked on Baldur’s Gate? We are making our way through the Underdark in our second playthrough and I needed something different, so I decided to download Divinity and do a solo run. The character creation is certainly much more bare bones than BG3, and I only played it for a few minutes (basically just messed around in the first tutorial level of the boat). Am I in for another wild and insanely detailed ride?

It's definitely extremely detailed with the same level of combat ride (and the beginning of Fort Joy is probably harder than the beginning of BG3). It's not on the same level as BG3 in terms of story though. I highly recommend keeping Fane in your party when you do your first playthrough, the storyline is tremendously better with him in it.

Sebille and Lohse have great personal storylines with good payoffs as well.

I'm playing it now. Bought it a while back on sale and am determined in finishing it before buying BG3

I'm maybe halfway through the opening zone. Really enjoying it. Narrator is awesome.

Lucky you. I guess Larian has decided to take advantage of the BG3 hype because it is currently in the ps store for $60 (although it is the Definitive Editikn, which I haven’t bothered looking into to see what that means)

Steam runs it on sale a lot. I'm sure I bought it years before BG3 was a thing.

Was also curious about this. BG3 has piqued my interest in CRPGs and I'm curious about picking this up after BG. However, I'm also worried I'll be disappointed after going through a run with BG.

That is standard for CRPGs. If you don't like lots of conversation mixed with fights, then stop playing now. Even though it is one of the top 5 CRPGs ever.

I wouldn't worry about that. They're different enough you can appreciate both on their own.
