Building a NAS

Didn't know if this would go here or the OT...
I am interested in building a NAS that would be used for multimedia storage and streaming to a couple of roku devices and eventually an HTPC...also as a Time Machine backup. Do you guys think this MB/CPU combo would work for HD streaming or should I go with something more powerful? I can get one of these for pretty cheap if it will work.

Just buy a Qnap and add the hard drives you want.

Those are expensive. I can build this for under $300 if this board will work.

Yeah, integrated. I can go a different route that will work for sure, but it's about $120 more expensive.

I know...I'm torn between giving myself more options and keeping it low power and in a mini-ITX case.

right on. The one that you posted looks like it's discontinued now.
Check this one out. Low cost, good reviews, and mini itx.

Awesome, thanks for sending that. Do you think that processor would be suitable for streaming HD movies?

To be honest, I don't really know. It may be but I wouldn't count on it. If it were me, I would be a mobo like I posted and throw an A4 or A6 apu in it. You would only be out 40-50 bucks more and have better performance, the ability to upgrade it, and resell value.

Yeah...I can get a mini ITX mobo with a much better processor....little more expensive but I'll probably end up going that route.

cool. Newegg also had a sale on Western Digital Reds 3tb, which would be perfect for you, today. Let me know what you end up going with, and how it performs. I've been wanting to build a nas/media server for a while and just haven't pulled the trigger on it.

If you have the spare parts, build a NAS... if not buy a prebuilt NAS.
TBH today NASs for personal use are a little city. Build yourself a "cloud" so you can access files from outside your network, even with a dynamic IP.

What soft RAIDs will you use because those embedded systems do not have any hard RAIDs.

I haven't made it that far yet, but I will probably use FreeNAS
