I have never played before but have been invited to start a quest with a group of other first time players.

We are using 5th edition.

I literally have no idea how to play or what I would be doing.

Is it fun?

How serious is it and detailed is it?

What is it that you actually do?

Any tips?

Bueller?

Is the entire group first timers?

D&D can actually be a lot of fun if you have a good playgroup. But it will always be better if there are experienced players in your group. You will obviously want an experienced DM (dungeon master) leading the way.

You might give this video a watch to get a general idea. This is with a mixed experienced playgroup with one of the better DM's.

Yes, no one has ever played, not even the DM.

First off, you'll need materials. All the rule books, and class guides for 5th edition can be quite expensive. You might look around for used copies, and maybe pool money, and share all the rulebooks. You'll also want a good campaign setting, as you'll see plenty of at the store. Or if your DM is good, he can it all himself, I guess. You'll all need proper sets of dice, character sheets, pencils, etc. DND has a fairly high initial cost...

What I would do, since it's all first timers, find a time for everyone to get together, drink some beers, have some pizza or something, and go through the process of rolling your characters. Come up with your party, learn rules, but don't start the actual campaign until the second time you guys get together. Use the first meeting to make sure everyone has all the materials they need.

I played from time to time years ago. Once your comfortable with your inner nerd, it's really fun.

Don't take it seriously. Role play, but have some fun with it. A couple dudes played it super cereal and the nerd/creep factor killed the fun. One dude got pissed because I did something he deemed "out of character". Didn't play with that chode again.

I played as a rogue. Fricking loved it. Being stealthy and being a smartass, finding hidden shite like traps...I wanted a character where I could be a bit of a clown, but be really useful to the party. Seemed to fit well. I tried to backstab a demon or something, got killed. The DM explaining how I got wrecked had us laughing until we were crying. Got resurrected after the fight and the rest of the party made a fake tombstone where I fell with some smartass epitaph on it "Here lies Me'lab with an epic fail backstab" or some crap

Yea, none of us are gonna be super serious.

None of us have plyaed any kind of "board game" like this and are just doing it to see what it is and for something new.

I mean we like fantasy shows and the like, but none of us have ever ventured into this territory before

The DM has all of this, he has been preparing for a couple of months.

Should I buy the players guide?

What the frick am I getting myself into?

I'd get the player's guide just so you know the boundaries of your character and what he/she can do. That way you're not trying to make your half-retarded orc trying to cast spells or some such nonsense.

I have little experience with 5e. Hopefully it's more simplified than what I last played with. Got way too complicated which is a big reason I stopped playing.

Has your group, or DM settled on a campaign? There are some new ones that seem fun.

I'm actually DMing for a group of first timers now.

5e is a great edition

It's definitly fun

Seriousness depends on the campaign setting and your DM, but that doesn't mean you have to be serious.

You create a character that goes on quests and battles monsters. Or maybe you DM makes a game where you're all gerbils in a garden that wants to eat vegetables. You can do anything.

Read everything. Get all the standard books.

**Someone in your group should try out bard. Not many like doing it at first, but the Bard in your group usually becomes the group favorite. Sure they won't do much damage or level a city, but they are hilariously fun.

No doubt, it looks weird as shite.

I might play one session and bail .

It'd supposed to be fun as hell though.

The core rule book is essential. Here's an online version LINK

The individual class guides aren't necessary, but are an extremely valuable resource. LINK

I'm playing a 5E monk right now and it's a good time.

The seriousness is entirely dependent on your playgroup, but it sounds like you won't be super serious about it, which is completely fine. I've played with groups all along the serious-not serious scale, but usually on the serious side.

My wife gets way more into it than I do. She's playing a LG Vengeance paladin in our campaign and is getting super stressed about it. She's the only LG character in the campaign and her paladin isn't handling our chaoticness very well, so she's conflicted between properly roleplaying the character (leaving the party entirely) and wanting to continue playing the character.

What does LG mean?

How exactly do you "roleplay" the character?

Do you describe things in first or third person?

Anymore essential reads?
