The modifier will be used more than the ability score and finding ways to get it higher is always in your best interest.

To get the short of it before the long, the modifiers are going to be what matter the most, but the ability score is your prime number. It represents the overall "health" of a character in that field.

THE TL;DR

Raising the ability score is one of the best ways to get a constant higher modifier and on the other side your character can be hit with poisons, spells, diseases, and just outright crippling attacks. These can vary from permanent to temporary effects and also cause some serious consequences.

Losing all your strength can render a person unable to move be it from too many broken bones or simply have the movement of their their lungs stopped by a lich. Either way, dead.

Drinking that glass of wine intended for a noble may inflict a poison that drains your constitution which can slowly end you life as your body withers from the inside out.

Getting smashed by a boulder from a giant may cause you to get a little softer in the head, costing you precious skill points upon level or taking enough, simply brain dead.

But ability score comes into play when you want to brute force something.

Sometimes you'll be called to or can call it for yourself a stat check. STR and CON are going to be your big ones.

So the rogue in the group probably has some points in the relevant skill for lock-picking and escaping bindings.

The paladin spending all his time honing knowledge of war and religion and none for subterfuge simply attempts to break the chain/door and start/continue smiting.

If you're having to make a CON check it's usually because your HP is below 0 and you're having a bad time, once your negative HP hits your CON score, you're dead.

So CON of 12 and you hit -12HP, goodbye Sir Solaire, Praiser of Suns.

Other things can be derived from it, like how long you can hold your breath in smoke or underwater is usually a CON score.

One thing I'm noticing by the character sheet is 5e took a hammer to skills in an effort to consolidate them, that's nice and is going to make those skill points worth more.

Lets say I have a Paladin with 17 STR and +3 modifier. The modifier is what matters with rolls. What is the significance of the 17? This post was edited on 1/13 at 2:31 pm

Certain things require a minimum score to achieve/use/interact with.

For instance, someone with a strength score of 8 would never be able to break down a large wooden door.

I've never actually played from a module. I've stolen ideas here and there from them but that's about it.

Modules exist to help players into the game and also promote the line. They also like to field test new ideas before putting them into a book proper. So it's a great way to see things before they hit the main game.

Some of the new 5th edition "modules" are pretty well put together, beginning with the one in the starter set, "The lost mines of Phandalin(sp)".

As to CBs question, I've looked thru the Strahd once since I may be DMing it (players should not do this). It is DnD mixed with horror and can be really deadly. If your DM is a new one, I would probably try one of the other modules first.

First off thanks to all the vets posting in this thread, I went to my local shop last night and purchased the 5e starter set. When I got home my kids were beyond excited even though they had no idea what this was about ...the character sheets and pictures got them going pretty good ...I've only done two delves(modules?) so I'm going g to be learning how to DM and using my fam as a test factory. I love that the starter kit has he lee made characters...will make for a much easier time...

Now for the hard part, putting together the maps and figuring out how I'm going to supply the board with miniatures...anyone have ideas ? Any they want to get rid of ?? Thanks

Wow...I went down the rabbit hole reading this thread. It's been decades since I played, and I got into it during early 80s with D&D Basic in the 6th grade...while waiting for the next book set, one of our parents goofed and brought home the 4 books for D&D Advanced. We just carried our characters over- it was a lot more fun and fixed a lot of questionable rules. This was all pre-1990 when we graduated.

I wonder what has changed with these, what, 5 editions? Is that the current book set, 5E?

When rolling characters...players can pick class, race, and alignment. Can ability score points, once rolled, still be traded with a 'penalty formula'? (Like a magic-user can trade 2 STR points for 1 INT point)?

Monsters still classified by HD?

Never thought about not dealing with cp, sp...all monies/ treasure in gp only...

Does dreaded "encumbrance" still affect speed of travel, initiative, 'rest rounds' etc?

We tried to stay within RAW, except for encumbrance...we abandoned it completely pretty quickly. It was either that or bury our loot (which would either disappear or take an hour of rolling to locate later) or just gift each character with a "bag of holding" which was just cheesy.

Half of the fun is being with the group, completely 'nerding out' and not feeling weird about doing it...it's certainly not for everyone.

Find some old board games that have the miniatures or just make some kind of markers. There's a ton of games that come with miniatures. Hero Quest and Talisman are two that come with a lot and a good variety of miniatures. Also look on eBay for bulk miniatures.

I'm not even sure if most people roll stats anymore...at least not in a legit way. Last time I played we just did a "17, 16, 15, 13, 11, 10" type situation where you could assign one number to the stat you wanted. No trading of stats that I've seen (your trading 2 str for 1 int scenario) Monsters have levels
Never seen encumbrance affect initiative or anything. It's not something my groups have ever worried with to be honest. But you do typically see a bag of holding or something similar drop fairly quickly to be used (although ours were never gifted to each member of the group...it was basically just one for the group after an encounter).

We had our first session.

It was a lot more than I thought it would be. DM was good, he had been studying his arse off apparently to make it a good experience.

I picked a Paladin and will probably be taking the Oath of Vengeance. I am already in conflict with a couple of characters as far as decisions .

The only thing that I didn't really like was when we were crawling around the dungeon the Paladin is kind of limited. He is a badass in combat, but his DEX isn't high and he can't really sneak around like the Rogue can. He just kind of follows the group.

What are some tips that I should be doing while in dungeons exploring? The group I am with is super cautious it looks like which is going to clash with my style. I like to just run in and wreck shite and ask questions later.

Awesome you are playing with the kids.

This is probably a really good tool to get their imagination going.

We rolled with https://roll20.net/ on the computer and used a digital map.

https://wiki.roll20.net/Useful_links_for_mapping

We also have a grid with a couple of miniatures it seems.

DM picked this one up

Tons of sites out there for miniatures.

Veterans of the game, what are some things that you did while crawling around Dungeons?

How did you stay engaged?

As a paladin, LG may seem limiting, and you're naturally going to have some decision issues with the group. I'll get into lawful good vs lawful stupid and how to get the most out of your paladin alignment when I'm not on a phone.

For dungeoning. Potions, oils, and magic are the best way to make an armored paladin sneaky. Otherwise take the tactical approach. Take up being bait.

My barbarian is sneaky as a rogue almost but his great sword glows bright blue. It not uncommon for him to dash through dark areas with a lightsaber and get various critters following him. Then the party attacks from behind.

So experiment with teamwork in ambushes.

We usually keep our paladin in the back. Mostly to safeguard against ambush, and then sneaky melee front.

Or if in the open the paladin in the middle and barbarian on a flank.

Bottle caps, Lego figures, miniatures from other games, kids erasers, pieces of paper with I Are Goblin all work.

I used to play Mage Knight so I have an excess of cheap fantasy mooks to field.

We've even used pieces from RISK.

If you want something more substantial. D&D and other games sell multi purpose prepainted minis.

Or

Reaper Miniatures (The Rabbit Hole Deepens)

They offer the Bone line which is a cheap, durable, and optionally paintable.

They also offer soft pewter and somewhere on there is a detailed figure finder.

Let's go further down the rabbit hole.

If you want to have your miniatures custom made from your own design you can do that too! Hero Forge has an online design tool where you can design your own miniatures. It's expensive as shite, but kinda fun to play around with if you get bored.

Do exactly that. It's fun. I once decided to say frick it and did the same thing. It ended up with me encountering something which got me a cloak that I then put on without identifying. I started having nightmares while sleeping and slowly getting turned in to a vampire.

Do you want a barbarian armed with a frying pan!?

Seriously it is a neat site to waste time on. I've read less than stellar things about the figs though.

No, the real problem for me is dice.

I have a few sets of the usual 7 for those that forget theirs or new or just trying out.

My current LSU themed set is

8 d20 w/4 off colors to determine crits.

5d4, 12d6, 4d8, 2d10, 1d%, 2d12.

So yeah. I have problems.
