I guess I haven't researched them. I might just have keep building for awhile.

Yeah the expansion pack set up is definitely there. That's why I said it may be worth waiting for a Steam sale.
The game's framework may be the best Paradox has created, but they rely heavily on expansion packs. I'm not sure it is revolutionary enough to warrant $40. I did buy it though because I am sucker.

It really is worlds better than anything else we've seen from them.

It's not really revolutionary in any way other than the exploring aspect. I think they're just dipping their toes into something there that's never been done. Can't wait to see how the exploring aspect evolves in the inevitable 29038409384 expansions.

I definitely feel that way. I'm enjoying myself with it and it's good but it's not nearly as deep as CK2 or EU4. Diplomacy feels very restrictedncomparednto those 2 and I do feel like at times, there simply isn't enough to do and there isn't enough character there to keep it always interesting. It needed to be fleshed out a bit more.
I can't wait to Hearts of Iron 4 comes out next month!

I think most of the content I've found is in playing bigger universes with fewer races. Just do more exploration and empire building.
The diplomacy is just not quite there yet. If you are being positive, you could say it is on par with EU's release. On the negative side you could say it was a smart move to stack those expansions.
Overall I'm not disappointed I spent money on it because there are quite a few things to do like playing with custom races, doing genetic manipulation etc. also interested to see what the modding community creates.

You see, I am not all that into the exploration.
And I'd say eu4s diplomacy is much better than this when it first launched. This is more on par with hearts of iron 3.

How is it different than Distant Worlds: Universe? I sorta skimmed some reviews, but it seems like the same sort of thing based on that.

Man, I kept playing today and had a pretty huge frustration spike with this game.
1) There seems to be no anti-blob technique with Federations. In my 8 starting empire game, 5 have just joined one federation.... I can't figure out a good way to pick them apart.
2) The lack of real zone control from "forts" is freaking ridiculous. Whenever you are at war there are fleets just flying everywhere. I guess you could coat every system in military stations, but holy frick is that an annoying prospect.
3) I was at war with another empire. Independently, that 5 man alliance was also at war with the same defender. I captured the three planets I wanted...... the big alliance then just peaced out and gave the planets I was controlling to one of their empires on the far side of map.... WTF?
Yeah...... that is pretty fricking stupid.

Stop your bitching. It's a great game and will only get better through patches and DLC. I've put hundreds of hours in ck2 and eu4 and hoi. These games are always a bit shallow and frustrating interface and have some imbalances at the beginning.
Trust in Paradox.

Can anyone define when exactly "late game" is. I mean I was wiping the floor with my neighbors but fallen empires were still untouchable.

First grand strategy game and I love it

I've played plenty of Paradox games, and I don't doubt they will fix every issue I mentioned. Unfortunately that will come with an extra $40+ cumulative price tag.
It is really frustrating that mechanics needed to make EU4 the great game it is are going to be delivered via drip feed DLC again.

Is it better than Spore?
Downvote me to hell for praising an EA/Maxis game, but from the first few episodes of the playthrough, it looks like Spore does exploration a lot better.

Let me toss on another downvote.

The first post-release Dev Diary is out. It confirmed two free updates that will fix a lot of the issues I mentioned above prior to the beginning of the expansions.
Nothing about changing the occupied planets thing. I still think that is a really weird design choice.

Meh.
Its a great opening game...the middle is dull...and the end game is average.
My biggest annoyance is the diplomacy (or lack there of) in the game. Very unlike paradox.
Just quit a game where I was destroying my opponent in a very bloody war...I was finally forced to grant him a white peace because I ran out of influence...what?!?
