Big news for delivery fans— UberEATS, Uber’s food delivery business, launches in New Orleans today. What does that mean? Basically, anyone can use the app to order from the menu at 100+ local restaurants and have food delivered.

The UberEats app can be downloaded here or you can also order online via ubereats.com. From there, you can set up a delivery address, browse restaurant menus, pay for food with a card on file, and track the order, which makes the process a bit different from a conventional restaurant delivery.

Participating restaurants include a range of eateries around town, from soul food spots to juice bars, including Willie Mae’s Scotch House, District Donuts, The Ruby Slipper, Juan’s Flying Burrito, City Greens, Raw Republic, MoPho, Company Burger and more.

UberEats is offering free delivery during the launch. No word on if Uber’s infamous surge pricing will also accompany those orders when demand is high. The delivery app is quickly expanding, with plans to enter 22 countries (yes, countries) in the near future.

I ordered every meal I ate last week from UberEats. Clutch having no delivery charge a lot of the time and not having to tip the driver.

Think they'll run a PBJ Donut from District out to me in Raceland?

No booking fee and I have a $10 discount code!

I only have like 4 options where I work at though. So it's slim pickings right now. Probably just get some Gattuso's.

I don't understand that part. How is the driver making money doing this?

All kinds of options. Primitivo, company burger, part and parcel, ninja sushi, mopho, Vincent's, wayfare, disrict, gracious bakery, tartine, root, brown butter, and many many others.

They have a progress bar:

The booking fee for UberEATS is a flat $4.99. We are excited that this will be waived for the initial launch period - enjoy! Note that prices and offers on the UberEATS website and in the UberEATS app may differ from prices and offers in the restaurant.

I think the restaurant basically pays the driver per delivery and increases prices on menu accordingly, then Uber takes their $4.95 fee. I will ask a restaurant owner friend who is participating.

I think that is Uber's cut and then the driver's get paid from fees collected from the restaurants + "busy" fees which sounds like surge pricing.

Maybe so. I just did a spot check of the prices at Zea's on the app and their website and they are the same.

From friend: Busy fees are surge pricing and after promotional period, restaurants will be paying fees based on the order amount. This is why you order through the Ubereats app. This is where drivers get paid. Drivers get paid a dollar figure per delivery with a guaranteed minimum amount per hour.

If you select items and go to check out it shows the food total and not extra charges and the only option is to pay check. Not sure when they hit you up for more.
