Do you pick it up locally (Colandro's, Mathern's, Martin's, Costco, etc.) or do you order it online?

(In Baton Rouge Area)

Depends on whether or not the juice is available locally. If it is, Calandros is pretty good about case pricing.

Are the case prices shown or do you ask them for case pricing?

Normally try to find a good local place, many of which offer a discount for case purchases.

I've belonged to a couple of wine clubs at various times, but have not really been happy with them.

I buy a lot from Winex and the wine library. Lots of things you just can't find at local stores. Albertsons will make a case order for you.

A buddy works for a distribution company that sells to a bunch of restaurants in NOLA so I get whatever I need from him. Try and find someone like that.

Find the "wine guy" when you are purchasing and double check. Most places the cashiers know to take the discount, but you do have to watch them. Minimum wage employees are not hired for brain power. Usual discount is 10-15%, depending on store.

Would you recommend those clubs? I respect your wine tastes, but have felt burned by some of the clubs that I've tried.

It depends on your tastes.

I like Rhone grapes, particularly syrah, so I gravitate toward wineries that specialize in those wines.

I have a special arrangement with Stolpman and Dragonette that I don't get automatic shipments. I buy what I like and get a 20% discount. But I've known these people for years so they let me do that. There was a time when I would gladly buy anything Dragonette made, but they've expanded to the point that that is no longer the case. Same with Stolpman. The winemaker Sashi Moorman has so many irons in the fire that their wines are hit and miss now IMO.

Blair Fox is getting to that same point in the last year or two. And they've added Petite Sirah to their automatic shipments lately. I'm sorry, but I don't want to pay $45 for Petite Sirah. So I'm thinking of dropping them.

If you like Syrah I would highly recommend Tensley. They're making the best Syrah south of Paso Robles IMO (with the exception of Sine Qua Non, which sells for well over $200 a bottle). Tensley's syrahs are in the mid $30's range with your discount and are well worth the price.

Here their website if you want to give it a look. They ship twice a year and you're obligated to buy 7 bottles a year, 3 in the Spring and 4 in the Fall.

I've been doing Naked Wines for a while. I like it but I'm no expert at all.
