I don't care for Cointreau. I find it lingers on the palate for far too long. I will think the margarita tastes great and then after a few seconds or a minute I will just have this odd taste of a not so natural orange flavor in my mouth. It is fine if I am drinking fast but once I stop I can taste that cointreau for a long time. For this reason I have never understood why Cointreau is one of the top shelf liquers.

Ultimate Margarita

Total Time:
5 min
Prep:
5 min
Yield:4 servings
Level:Easy
Next Recipe
Ingredients
1 lime, halved
Coarse salt
1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice, from about 4 limes
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 cup orange-flavored liqueur (recommended: Grand Marnier)
1/4 cup Triple Sec
1 cup gold tequila
Ice
1/2 can good quality lager-style beer
Lime wheels, for garnish
Directions
To salt the margarita glasses, rub the outside rims of 4 big glasses with a cut lime and press them lightly into a plate of kosher salt, to coat.

Combine the lime juice, sugar, orange liqueur, Triple Sec, tequila, and a big handful of ice in a cocktail shaker (or blender). Shake the margarita really well, for a good 20 seconds, add a splash of beer and strain into the salt rimmed glasses filled with ice. Garnish with a lime wheel.

Here's the issue with that recipe. There is no such thing as a good quality lager style beer.

That's a LOT of lime juice. Too much for me.

It follows the traditional 2-1 base to modifier ratio common in many drinks. Except in this case, it's a double base with the cointreau modifying the tequila and the simple syrup balancing out the tartness of the lime juice.
