On my mom's side, I love my grandmother's dirty rice. She still makes batches special for me.. even though she said she would never cook again when my grandfather passed away last year.

Can't really say for my grandmother on my dad's side. What I remember most from childhood at their home was that they had mini crystal chalices, and PawPaw would give us cranberry juice in them. We would play holy communion with it.. Horrible, I know.

My grandma made the best spaghetti and meatballs. She made a homemade red gravy that was out of this world. I have the recipe but just haven't been able to replicate it.

Oh and she also used to make cornbread stuffing from scratch. My dad makes it but my grandma must have put something special in it because hers was a lot richer.

I am envious of all of you.

My "fraternal" grandmother and my "sorority" grandmother were both deceased long before I was born.

I did have an old aunt who was like a surrogate grandmother. She fried eggs in an old black iron skillet.

The whites and yolks were soft and tender but the edges were lacy and crispy. Perfect!

Crawfish bisque.

When she would make it, she'd call the whole family to come eat.

Her and my grandpa = 2
That's 4 sons and 1 daughter w/spouses = 10
The grandkids = 12

24 folks all crammed in the house lol.

My cousins and I would all pile up on the wooden swing outside and try to flip it over.

I miss times like that

Mine would have a similar amount of family members when she made it.

She had quite the elaborate rationing system for who got how many stuffed heads, as well.

Good thread madam.

Granny, my mom's mom (whose parents came from Sicily through Ellis Island) made a great chicken caciatore.

Maw Maw, the petit and ever-pious Cajun grandmother cooked all the usual dishes mentioned on here as good as anyone else.

But the one thing I really miss that she would serve me is CUSH CUSH.

I know a few of you here know exactly what I'm talking about.

Dad's mom. It was like having Julia Child as a grandmother. She was a Cordon Bleu graduate.

On my Mom's side, fried chicken.

On my Dad's side, not a meal but the best pecan pie. I have yet to find one nearly as good as hers was.

Yes, or with calf brains and eggs at age 5 for breakfast.

She was an ol Cajun lady who could cook anything & make it taste great but for some reason, as plain as this may sound, she cooked the BEST baked chicken & rice and gravy, with smothered leeks, smothered squash, & a mustardy/eggy potato salad. MAN! I could tear that up by the plate fulls. I haven't met anyone who can bake a chicken like her or smother leeks the way she did. I've got the smothered squash & potato salad down to a science but that chicken rice & gravy & smothered leeks cannot be duplicated. RIP Mommie

my grandma in MS-chicken and dumplings...she'd have flour all over the kitchen. strawberry cake and banana pudding and somehow the best damn fried porkchops. They were soooo thin. Also her pecan pie, that got sweeter every year. Also her roast and gravy. Pretty much everything she made was awesome.

my mimi in LA-I can't remember her making anything other than salad dressings.
