I know he addresses that marketing and branding is key to success but this is the spot he finds after years of looking?

Hopefully they succeed in that spot because there are a number of nearby places that are all successful.

This. I don't see any 1 restaurant making it there very long. Real estate there has to be astronomical.

For something to work there you need a high turnover of tables in a relatively quick time frame, while providing quality food that you can get at low low prices.

Good luck to whomever can make it work. I just don't see any restaurant lasting there long term.

How does the place look? Is it very island swamp beach like?

Interesting you say the marketing thing because, besides this thread, I havent heard anything about the place and I live nearby.

Thats what I mean is they need some sort of presence.

Stained wood on the walls, some different wood pieces and mounted fish, sharks, etc.

They are trying to buy the area to the left to expand. Really good food and decent bar selection.

Suckered in by Walk-Ons.

If it doesn't catch on by the end of football season, send in another restaurant.

Wait, I thought Chimes East was doing all the suckering in?

There are plenty of successful places in that tiny area. Pluckers, Izzos, Mellow Mushroom, 9 dragon, Roly Poly. Its not like its a wasteland of failed food spots.

That was my attempt at humor. However, don't think that the success of Walk-Ons didn't play a role in their decision making.

Their full name is The Bullfish Bar + Kitchen. They are going after the drinking crowd. Frankly, I don't know what their draw is. I guess they are hoping to catch some overflow from Walk-Ons or they think they can draw customers away from Walk-Ons. But this is all speculation on my part. I'm not super familiar with the ongoings in that area. Not enough to form a hardcore opinion anyway.

But there is one thing that bothers me about their chosen location: It's in a hotel. That's a big red flag to me. For some reason, it's a big psychological barrier for restaurant-goers to overcome. Restaurants located in hotels just don't do very well. And it's likely the reason the other restaurants didn't succeed.

I don't think any of these restaurants are located in a hotel.

Like you said, restaurants can and do succeed in the area. So why did Couyon's, Leroy's, Marty J's fail? It's either they are sucky restaurants that can't draw a crowd or the location is sucky. I think it's mostly due to a sucky location, being inside a hotel. And frankly, I'm not sure heavy marketing can overcome it.

The whole feel of the place says they are going after the post-college age crowd. How many of that age group lives in that area? Can't be enough to bet a restaurant on. I'd really like to know what they are thinking or what they were thinking to being with.

What are your happy hour specials/specialty menu items?

Why should we choose to eat/drink at your place vs. others in the area?

I'd love to hear more.

ETA: also, if you click the link button under markup while editing your post and paste the link to the Facebook page there, people will be able to click it. That will drive more traffic to your page.

From the article, it sounds like they are advertising their food and rum in a 'beach swamp' feel

Roly Poly is in the same building. Not really a restaurant though. I know I dont speak for the public but I dont consider that space to be inside a hotel. You dont have to go through a lobby, park far away, or anything like lets say dining at a large Hilton hotel.

I think it was a combo of both with probably the location being a main one. In that area, you have to cater to a college crowd. From my time at LSU, you rarely ever ate and drank at the same place as your place to go out that night. Food wasnt high on the priority list, drinking was.

Make it a bar and be done with it. Its a safer option.

Not much. Thats why I think a bar should be tried there. Look at the places that are successful in that area. Pizza, chicken wings, cheap chinese, izzos. Thats the definition of a college area.

A bar won't be any more successful there than it is where Shadys was or than it will be where Rotolos was. There are 5 bars in Tigerland, whatever Shadys is now, Bogies, Mellow, Dive Bar, and Walkons if you want to consider that a bar too. Mamy of these places are empty 5-6 nights per week due to how many places there are around them and the fact that there aren't enough people to support that many bars.

Tack on the new bars in north gates area, and you can see the last thing that is needed is another shitty bar in that area. And I doubt anyone with an expensive model like Bulldog is beating down the door to open on Nicholson in a hotel.

If we are talking safest option in that location, the answer is getting a well-known quick service chain that college students love.. like Zoe's Kitchen or Panera.

Shadys was run like shite and I wasnt surprised to see it closed. I was dragged there twice and the place looked like a frat house at 2am of the Bama game. Im talking about the cleanliness of the place, not the fun atmosphere.

Bogies probably kills it. Mellow is not a bar and I only knew it as the place to drink on a Tuesday night for open mic. Dive Bar opened 5 minutes ago so the book is still out on that. Walkons isnt a bar for college kids. They had 1 'bar' night on Sundays and that was killed when bars were allowed to stay open on Sundays.

I dont consider the space to be in 'that area', meaning an area including the north gates.

I can get on board with that. shite, Id love for there to be a Zoes right there. I think a swamp beach whatever the hell is a terrible idea and I bet it wont last a year, might not even go 6 months. Hopefully the owners made a lot of cash selling underwear in the north to fund this bad idea.

Pretty sure Roly Poly is not in the same building. They are in the building next door. Unless they moved or something.

looks nice, won't survive. You aren't going to get post-college people to fight campus traffic to go there. Will cost too much for your average college student.

8 football games isn't enough to survive.
