Just doing what I've always known. A quick Google says it is somewhat a myth as far as no tomatoes ever touching it.. but you're strongly urged not to do it unless your cast iron is years' worth of seasoned..
I'm sure it won't kill the pot, but I'm not using my cast iron for something that won't benefit flavor-wise from its use, personally.
