So are you saying if I pay for a 2 ounce pour of GTS, you are only pouring me 1.5 and charging me for 2oz?

Order by the finger and stop worrying about it.

Three fingers pour, neat. My wife laughs if the waitress blushes.

I want a two inch pour, regardless of glass size or shape. I'll let it linger and change throughout the meal.

Edit: If it's any consolation The Big Texan got me for $110 bucks the other night for three fingers of GTS.

Order by the finger and you'll get hefty pours.

That pour the other night was probably over four ounces.

Some places pour an extra .5 ounce for rocks and charge a little more. Some pour the same for neat, cocktail, or rocks and charge the same.

I don’t order a lot of liquor at bars, so when I ran across this it was confusing. But Google and you will find many references to the practice. It varies.

Here’s one:

There’s a $2 “rocks” upcharge on my tab when I order whiskey on the rocks. Am I paying for ice?
—Sue in Ambler

Philly Mag food editor Alex Tewfik

Ah, the rocks charge, one of the restaurant industry’s great flusterers. It’s maddening to think you’re paying for ice—which is why you should know that you’re not. You’re paying for more liquor! It all depends on the bar’s drink pour.

If you get a whiskey soda, most spots will pour 1.5 ounces of whiskey over ice and then top with club soda. If you order whiskey on the rocks, the pour can be a half-ounce more, which is the reason for the upcharge. Some places will build it right into the cost of the drink; others mark it as a modification with an upcharge.

***
Some make a distinction between shots and other pours:

How Many Ounces Is a Pour of Whiskey?
Like other liquors, a standard whiskey pour is 1.5 ounces for shot, 2 ounces for a neat or rocks pour, and 3 ounces for a double. LINK

It’s how restaurants charge for 2oz instead of 1.5oz . If you get scotch and soda, you get 1.5 oz; on the rocks, 2oz. The theory is having the glass not look empty. It’s not a good look for guests to see it that way. I’ve seen it in 100 restaurants like that. Usually shows as “ rocks” on computer. Obviously confusing on bill.

Not sure why this is down voted.

Because places should not be pouring more or less depending on if ice is involved. If they indeed do so then they absolutely must state as much on the menu. I don't know of any restaurants that do this practice, so it sounds like your place a decade ago and the OP's recent incident are outliers, not the norm.

No. I'm saying they charge you more because they pour more.

I think it's definitely getting phased out and was old school even back when I was bartending.

We charge extra for block ice, there is a lot of extra work to make that ice. No charge for cubes.

ETA, 1.5 oz pour for us regardless if it is neat, rocks or block ice.

What kind of extra work? Seems like it would fall under the scope of work of a bartender getting their bar ready for service. Cut fruit, make syrup etc

Do you advertise the added cost and what is the cost?
